Crossbow
« on: October 16, 2024, 09:20:59 PM »
My stepson Talon hunts with a crossbow. He just bought a new one and he's sending me his old one. I won't do any hunting with it but I'll play with it some. It's a Barnett Droptine. I think he said 155 lb draw weight and 360 FPS. He's sending a string cocker but I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to have a crank for it.

Very interesting! I bowhunt with trad recurves and have hunted with compounds, but never a Xbow.

I've never hunted with a bow but I've had quite a few recurves and a couple of compounds. I got my first recurve when I was about 11 or 12 and it probably had a 20 lb. draw weight. My buddy had a 30 lb draw weight IIRC and his was stronger than mine. A couple of years later I got a 40 lb. My last one was laminated wood with a 60 lb draw. Then I fell off the top of a chip trailer and caught myself one handed and almost ripped my shoulder completely out of socket. I'd have been better off just hitting the ground and that ended my bow shooting days. That was in the 80's and it still gives me problems to this day. That's why I say I'll probably need a crank. A string cocker cuts the cocking force in half but that's still 75 lbs. I won't be shooting it much at that rate. Thankfully it's set up to install a crank.

Got nothing to poke holes in. I thought about trying to cock it to see if I could do it but it doesn't have a decocker on it. I thought about just shooting it in the ground but I don't want to take a chance on killing somebody in China (7+" (7+" (7+"

A tree would destroy the shaft and I doubt I'd get the point back.

Buy a Block. A decent one is about a Benjamin but if you store it out of the sunlight and don't shoot point blank it should last you a good long while.

I'm going to try to get one next month but funds are limited and the rolling block is my first priority.

Hey Hawg,  have you shot your new cross bow?  You have quarrels and points, right?  You were waiting for a useable target, IIRC.

Recently got my new Pyramid Air catalog.  They sell crossbows and  have
one shown for over $4400. Now that’s a crossbow you be seein in your sleep.  It looks very complicated to put it conservatively. Ropes, pulleys, gears, and what they call cams, but aren’t really cams at all.  Mechanical force multipliers.
You’d need a Dassault whisperer just to keep it tuned.  I’d have to go back to school just to begin to understand it. That’s why Ima stick with good old wooden bows and percussion revolvers - but some of those crossbows are hella things, no doubt.

No I haven't shot it yet. My disability check took a major hit this month. I've got bolts and points but nothing I can shoot it into. Maybe next month.
