Getting a Dragoon!
« on: November 12, 2024, 03:21:22 PM »
So it looks like I'm going to be getting a Uberti Dragoon. I think it's a 2nd model. Used, but I don't know how old it is.

Thanks! I thought the older ones were better. My Uberti '62 Police sure is a sweetheart, and I think it was made in the '70s.
Either way I intend to check if the arbor needs shimming, and take care of that post haste if so.

The general build quality of the newer examples is much better than any of the older (pre 2010) examples.  Personally for me, the faster rifling twist suits my converted revolvers (mainly Uberti's) best.
Your arbor will be short .  .  .

Good to know, Mike. Fast twist is a good thing because I would like to shoot some heavy conicals in it.
Fixing the arbor shouldn't be too difficult. I'll just try different thicknesses to find what it needs, then probably put a drop of bearing retainer in the hole before dropping the shim in place and reassembling.

Nice WECSOG. I'm sure it will be fun for you. Always nice to get a new/old gun. I have 2 but just sold my Replica Arms ASM Model 2. Funny thing about it is the wedge inserts like a Walker meaning it slides in on the right side LOL. It's a beautiful gun made in 1968. My other is a CVA ASM Model 3. I almost regret selling it but I have another gun in mind. When you get it please hang a picture here for us to enjoy.

I have 2 2nd models and a 1st. I love 'em both! Enjoy your new toy. Do pay attention to the loading lever sliding latch as most stock ones will drop it a la Walker with 45 grains or more unless you increase the catch angle.

I'll definitely look at that, Cap'n. Thanks for the heads up!

One of the things I like about the Dragoons is they still have that "Colt" feel to them. For such a large gun they handle pretty well. Walkers, however, are a different ballgame.
Only Blackpowder is interesting.

I don't think I have ever handled a Dragoon although I was really interested in them when I first got into c&b revolvers about 50 years ago.

I just got a pm from the seller informing me that he received my check and it's on its way! So, hopefully I'll soon have it in my grubbies.

I had a 3rd model dragoon. It's a handful of pistol but a popsiclecat to shoot. There's two styles of lever latch. A vertical latch and a latch like the 51 navy. The vertical latch is bad about dropping. I "think" the navy style latch is better about not dropping.

Do you know when they changed from one latch type to the other? Was it one of the upgrades to the Second or Third model?

Popsiclecat????? :icon_scratch:  That is not what I wrote. Colt changed the latch sometime on the 2nd model I believe. The original 3rd models had the navy style latch. Uberti makes or made 3rd gens with the vertical latch at least as of 2013 when mine was made. ASM made them with the navy style latch.
