Cap thread update
« on: December 18, 2024, 02:35:30 PM »
As of today I’ve had 136291 of the percussion cap information I’ve posted on the Colt forum and on YouTube cap making videos.  Ad to this the posting of many others like “Mike 116” That’s a lot of folks interested in cap making.  It’s still not enough to motivate the ammo makers to produce more caps and other blackpowder supplies.  Of the millions of Americans who own guns a smaller number make it to ranges regularly.  A smaller number buy ammo regularly.  An even smaller number are owners of cap and ball guns.  Not many of these make it to ranges to shoot their 6 shooters. So the population of customers is very small.  After the Covid pandemic and the war in Israel and Ukraine the Blackpowder community is way down the list after active shooters and reloaders.

Caps seem to be somewhat more available than before, and prices are creeping down slowly. I recently bought 1000 Remington 10s for under $100.

I went to an LGS here in town and he sells individual 100 cap tins. I try to support local businesses. I had bought a couple of tins from him a good while back. His price then for a tin of #11 CCI were about $7.95. His price is now $12.95 a tin.  :icon_scratch:
I bought some anyway. He doesn't sell bulk.

Yeah, I think that's kinda the going price right now. I've seen them in a local Academy for about that. Occasionally they pop up for less, though. If I hadn't found those Remingtons I probably would have bought some $110 per thousand CCIs when the free shipping and free hazmat sales were going on. Maybe add a few lbs of BP too.
Some of the Walmarts near me have slots for caps at less than $6 per tin, but I haven't managed to get there while they had stock yet. But things are looking up.

I think my LGS is still selling CCI #11 for 8.00 per tin but I haven't been there for awhile so not sure. They don't stock #10's.

Same here on the Walmart thing. They never seem to have them but do have a place for them. Somebody probably buys them all if they are lucky enough to be the first one there on re-stock day.

Tried making caps a few times but found it frustrating. This from a person who finds reloading and bullet casting, hour after hour, as relaxing. So, when something like percussion caps(and primers) become available I just pull out the credit card and purchase as much as I can. I find it easier to pay the balance off over time than complain about not shooting because of what's not available. I hope that doesn't sound like a lecture, it's just that shooting is my priority and I don't want that interrupted. Merry Christmas everyone!!

Six has got the right idea on this, he always has.  I personally most identify with the men who shoot their guns.   Plenty of acquisitive collectors out there who talk and collect and display and talk, but there’s no smoke in it.  I doubt many of them get off the couch and are clearly not outdoorsman.  I like to stomp through the wet woods or ride through and blast shit.  With a little attention, it’s not that hard to have what you need.

I used to love doing that but I can't do it anymore. All I can do is go out in the backyard and shoot once in awhile when it's not too hot or too cold. I can't take either one anymore. Plus there's cows in the back pasture and their food and water is almost directly behind the house so they have to cooperate and stay in the woods but when it's not too hot or cold they're usually at their food and water. There's a hayfield across the road where I can shoot up to 400+ yards but I can't put up anything permanent and the grass is usually too high. So mostly I just sit here and talk about it.

When you talk, Hawg, you speak from deep experience.  It’s always well worth our attention.  You once posted a photo of that lovely pasture across the way, and mentioned tall grass.  I suggested some planted rebar with coffee can hats.  Still do.

By the time I drive the rebar in I'd be too tired to do anything else and then I'd have to take them back up when I leave. It is a good idea tho and I may do that in the backyard.

Everyone's situation is different as I see it. We all have things that require our attention. Honey do's when you get home from work and honey do's on the weekend and living in the city limits, kids, grandkids and then you have mother nature dictating what your activities will be for any given day. It may sound like excuses to some but it is a reality to many. I also imagine that there are those who are shooting and yet say or share nothing about it. God bless us all, everyone.

Well said, Tiny Tim!
IMHO you don't have to be a member of the Frequent Flyer's Club to enjoy owning, or even just appreciating our heritage and the love of BP firearms. Like many of you, I shoot when and where I can, and have many things competing for those precious time slots. No harm, no foul. I'm satisfied having a place to share my experiences and interests with all of you on a daily basis! Everyone's input, large or small and however varied (thank you, Dragoon Rick, for sharing your wealth of knowledge on home-made caps!) Is a different perspective and both valued and welcome here! To G-Dog's point, I WISH I had more time, money and energy to waste on shooting more often, but things are what they are. I would not trade one hour of time with my grandkids for and hour of range time...some things have an intrinsic value worth more than gold.
Just my 2 cents.

I do both, buy/stockpile and make caps. Same for powder. I like to have enough store-bought caps and powder so I can head out to my backyard shooting range or into the woods beyond anytime I wish, without worrying about depleting my supply. And I also like shooting my homemade BP and homemade caps, and homemade bullets/balls with no ding at all to my store bought stash. For that, I usually use my single shot frontstuffer pistols. I can shoot them cheaper than .22 rimfire.
