48 pocket

Picked up a 48 pocket, Uberti, was advertised as a baby dragoon. This has oval cyl stops,square back trigger guard but has an octagonal barrel instead of round. Is this still a baby dragoon or not? It does not have a loading lever, either.     Thanks,,  Mark

The Baby Dragoon has a silver plated square back trigger guard.   The round, brass trigger guard is usually called a Wells Fargo.   
Both revolvers are 1849 pocket models.   A lot of times people use the names interchangeably but technically they are different.   There are some .36 cal repros around but I don't know if Colt made any in .36 cal.

I thought the 48 baby dragoon had oval cylinder stops, square back trigger guard and a round barrel instead of octagonal, since the big brother has round. Didn't realize silver had anything to do with it, as even some 51's were silver plated. But I'm just learning about these little guys. Thanks for the information Mike.      Mark

By the way, I also have a 49 wells Fargo. It has the round brass guard, normal cylinder stops, and octagonal barrel in31 cal.

I've never seen a round barrel one.   Silver trigger guards on '51s are "civilian models".    Every time I think I have it all figured out I see something new.   Colt and the Italians had many variations.  A lot of Italian variations were never made by Colt.

Yes it is a baby dragoon.  The only small frame Colt that had a round barrel was the Pocket Police.  Silver plated BS/TG does not mean the pistol was a 'Civilian Model'.  '49 Pocket Models, '51 and '61  Navies, Pocket Police and Pocket Navy, and '60 Armies could all be had with brass, silver plated or blued iron BS/TG. The back strap on the 1860 Army only came in blued steel.
