Question - were conicals more popular / available than round ball, post civil war?
I do recall reading somewhere that there were millions of paper cartridges made for the Civil War and available surplus post CW. Just wondering on the availability of round ball and loose powder.
I bet a Bannerman catalog from that era would answer that question.

Sounds like you figured out the issue.
I like to fill a chamber of my Pietta's with powder then dump that, carefully, into my powder measure to see how much powder will fill the chambers. IIRC my 44 1860 Piettas will take 40gr of FFFg and my 36 cal 1851 Navy Piettas will take 30gr of powder.
It is possible to ram (with effort) a soft round ball on top of those chamber full charges. The ball will deform.

I sent a pair of Pietta 1851 Navy & a pair of 1860 Army revolvers to TheOutlawKid for his posts and shields. They came out great!

Shot my 1st ever CAS match this last Saturday with the Southern Missouri Rangers.

About 15 men, women, and children there of all ages. Shot on 5 different stages. Was a good time, targets were close and nearly impossible to miss. 1st time out I wasn't concerned with the clock shot 4 out of 5 stages clean.
Found I was "quick" using my pair of Uberti 1873 revolvers (Hombre & El Patron) and Rossi 92 lever action (using 38 special factory smokeless in all 3). I was slow manipulating my "new" Winchester 97 shotgun. Need to work the action harder to eject spent shells plus watch some videos on using it for cowboy action. Found the gun - 1927 DOM at a garage sale for $300, 2 weeks ago, and test fired it out front of the house (for the 1st time) before heading to the shoot. It works!

Getting late here otherwise, I'd go fire off some rounds out back for you guys.
I could do some night fire though.
I grew up in the North suburbs of Chicago. Worked and rented all over the suburban area. In 2009 I went to Iraq as a contractor. Making 6 figures plus - we jumped at the opportunity to escape Illinois. A year later, we found a nice house on 10 acres and moved to Southern Missouri - in the sticks. Love it.
I'm finally home for good after 10 years of working overseas.
I could do some night fire though.

I like guns and bought my 1st shotgun at age 16. In college (mid 1990s), I bought my 1st handgun a Glock 21. Have a ton of modern guns and do enjoy those.
In 2000 I visited a Civil War Reenactment at The Grove in Glenview, Illinois. FC Sutler had a tent and was selling all manner of neat guns and clothing.
Grabbed a business card. Did a little research and bought a Pietta 1858 from FC Sutler and a Kirst Conversion cylinder in 2001. While I had an Illinois gun card - FOID at the time I saw assembling a firearm with components bought online, a way of saying "Screw You" to Illinois and their crazy gun laws.
Shot the gun a couple times, the action was gritty. The combination costed as much as a Ruger Blackhawk. Shelved the gun for 13 years. In 2014, before heading off to Africa - I decided I wanted to shoot it in its original configuration. Chatted with some knowledgeable folks over at my other favorite forum - survivalistboards.com, bought some caps, Pyrodex pellets, and round ball. Fired it off and was hooked!
Have 6 C&B revolvers now (2 Remingtons & 4 Colts) + a Lyman Great Plains percussion rifle.

I am not advocating waiting long periods before cleaning BP firearms. I will still clean as soon as It is convenient but I'm not going worry about leaving a gun dirty for a few hours.
I wouldn't call you a "Chicken Little" type. They are ones who look for opportunities to tell the masses that their ways are the only correct way and if you don't do exactly what they do then your world will fall apart around you. One of the reasons I have stuck with this forum and the 1858 forum is that the "Chicken Little" mentality doesn't happen much here.
Many people will offer advice on just about any subject on earth, It's up to us to decide what is valid and what is bullsh*t.

I completely agree.
I like to shoot more than I do clean. I like to shoot ever day and since moving out into the sticks I can, by just stepping out my back door.
With BP C&B revolvers I'll shoot 4 to 6 days in a row and clean on the 7th day.

Real nice looking setup.
I think I'd be tempted to try a blued screw set in the frame of the gun to give it some contrasting colors.
Then I'd be tempted to blue the trigger and hammer to match the cylinder.
Lastly I'd get the barrel lined so I don't need to mess with healed or hollow base bullets.
This fella has a good price on barrel lining.
