Colt Automatics / Dad's 45 - Series 70 Colt Government Model
« on: August 31, 2018, 12:51:16 PM »
Dad was salesman for an aluminum foil company. He had a sales route that saw him driving to visit customers in the Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana. At some point he got into a fender bender back in the 1970's with a road raging idiot. Guy threatened him with a tire iron. Dad sped off but was a little freaked out by it. He did some research and bought this pistol plus a 12 gauge pump shotgun with bulk ammo to go with both guns. FMJ for the Colt and 00Buck for the 12 gauge. He also put a year or more worth of canned freeze dried survival food under our basement steps.

Mom tells me a story of how on one Halloween night she answered a knock at the front door and was expecting children trick or treating. Instead she found a huge black guy who started coming in the house. She yelled out to my Dad:

TOM! Get your gun I need help!!

Dad came out of the bedroom with his Colt Series 70 45 which he kept loaded "cocked and locked" and said:

"Get the hell out of my house!"

The Dude saw the gun, turned right around, and got out of there quick.

Dad passed away when I was 12. A good family friend taught me to hunt and shoot plus stored this gun for me till I was 21 and legally able to possess it in Illinois with a FOID card. I inherited it bone stock with the cardboard box and all the paperwork including original receipt.

In the 1990's when I was in my 20's, I of course, ruined all it's collectable value by having a bunch of custom work done to it. Had the following added: Kings beaver tail grip safety, Kings ambi-safety, Videcki Speed Trigger, taller dovetailed sights, lowered and flare ejection port, polished and throated barrel, custom cut hammer bead blasted to match the color of the trigger, a insanely LIGHT trigger job, and the whole thing reblued. I later on added the non-matching color Wilson bullet proof slide stop and shot the heck out of it.

I've retired it to the gun safe for the past 10 years and shoot once in awhile. It currently has hammer follow and I'll probably replace the hammer with a commander hammer some time in the next couple of years.

1873 SAA Colts / Show & Tell - Colt Frontier Scout + a pair of Uberti's
« on: August 31, 2018, 11:35:00 AM »
Just showing off some more of my guns.

Picked up this Colt Frontier Scout from Gunbroker back in 2015. According to the auction it's from 1958. I haven't confirmed that. At the time I was looking to buy a single action 22LR. Either a Ruger Single Six, Bear Cat, or one those cheap Heritage Rough Rider revolvers. Seemed like every tiny little gun shop I walked into had a Rough Rider for sale.

I already have a S&W M17 22LR revolver and wanted a single action to go with it. I find I enjoy putting a large handful of 22LR in my shirt pocket and plinking at targets of opportunity around my land. Far easier to load a revolver than mess with magazines. The finish on this Frontier Scout is worn but it still has the 4 click hammer and is fun, lightweight, little shooter. This one only has the 22LR cylinder, some come with a spare 22 mag cylinder.

I believe this was Colt's not so successful attempt to compete with Ruger.

I gave $276 + transfer for it. These are pictures from the auction. The finish in real life is black / missing vs the purple Ruger hue shown:

Next up is my 1st Uberti 1873 Hombre. Back in 2012 a seller on gunbroker had these brand new for a fixed, buy it now, price of $250. He had a bunch of them in 357 magnum and 45 Colt. Other than seeing these in the Cabela's / Bass Pro catalogs and thinking they were overpriced for such an ugly finished gun, I didn't know much about them. I bought this on a whim.

Hindsight being 20/20, I should've bought 2 in each caliber. $250 was steal of deal. I read later that CAS clubs were buying these using them as loners for new shooters to the sport. It's another one of my favorite guns and I'll frequently wear it around my property. Can't say that I've ever shot it on paper, mostly use 38 special in it against my steel gong.

My most recent purchase, as of just a couple weeks ago, is another 357mag Uberti, an El Patron Competition. I've been wanting another 357 Uberti with the goal of shooting Cowboy Action some day. The dealer that has the current low prices on the Uberti Walkers also has 45 Colt El Patrons at a reasonable price that I've been real tempted by.

I figured I'd just tale a peek at the rest of the El Patron's on gunbroker and found this $200 "bump and dent" special. Has some holster wear plus is missing it's ejector housing, ejector rod, spring, and screw. Looking at Taylor's - that about $75 worth of parts. Googling around it seem the ejector rod housing screw is known to break on these. I believe Brownell's sells a hardened screw. I image, that's what happened to this one and the owner pawned it. Should be an easy fix.

Pics are from the auction and the gun is currently sitting at my dealer. I'm not sure if this has 4 hammer clicks or 3 but for $200, I couldn't pass it. Serial # is UB4XX4.

Feel free to show off any of your guns.

« on: August 05, 2018, 08:19:17 AM »
Here's my pair of Pietta 1860 Army revolvers. Bottom one one in pic below was bought new from Dixie Gun Works in 2015. The top one was bought used off of Gunbroker. It came with the conversion cylinder, only. I bought a replacement BP cylinder for it.

Here's the 2015 Pietta Colt 1860 Army, 30grs Graf's Schuetzen FFFG black powder, Wonder Wads, .454 Hornady Ball, Remington #10 caps, 2 hands standing 21 ft - backyard range.

Navy Models / Showing off my new Pietta 1851 Navy

Picked this one up in the latest $50 off all Pietta's at Cabela's sale. It's a 2018 production gun. I polished off a 100 count box of Hornady .375 round ball through it over the course of my past 4 week vacation. Did all my shooting without wads. Varied between 20gr of Goex to 30gr of Graf's and Remington #10 caps. I have 2 flasks that throw those powder charges.

Here's a couple targets I posted on some other BP boards. I blame my sweating hands for those 2 flyers. Most of my shooting was out back of my house at my 25yd steel gong.
