Wads, Lubes, Patches, Cleaning Supplies, etc / Cleaning agents?
« on: March 01, 2023, 11:48:37 AM »
I was just given one liter of Break Free in a spray bottle. It's used, by the armed forces, for cleaning machine guns. It says made in Jacksonville, FL.
Is this something you guys are familiar with?

I got this original Remington Rider .36 D/A. It has been re-blued by some earlier owner. The re-bluing is almost expetly done, but he forgot the hammer.
Now then, the gun doesn't look its age. So, I've nurtured the idea of defarbing it and give it a brownish/greyish look of a well used original.

I need your opinions, pros and cons, go-aheads and threats .......

This is the gun:

Range Safety / Range safety

Cannot find any safety thread on here (there's one on the Remi Forum) so I'll start this ....
When I shoot on my back yard range, I want to have total grip/hold/control of my surroundings...
This also includes sound/hearing control. I found lifting and replacing the hearing protection thingie did affect the pleasure of shooting. I therefore invested in a pair of Mickey Mouse styled protection, that cuts out the bang but, gives perfect all around hearing in between shots. This takes the shooting sessions to a new level.

Here's my first contribution, shooting shotgun this morning. I took screenshots out of a video. I do not know how to cut a video down to a small amount of Mb:s, but if you copy these frames to a file you can run them with a photo viewer and sequence the frames to a short video. Other pics from the occasion, such as the target, number of pellets in the target and some close-ups ot the 1857 shotgun will follow.

Scatterguns / Percussion shotgun newbie

I got hold of a Saxon double barreled shotgun, made about 1860. Mint condition. 18 bore and a 32" barrel length. After a total dismantling, cleaning and reassembly, I shot it today. Being cautious I loaded 30 grains and number 4 or 5 pellets. No problems.
Now I need some of your expert advice on BP amount, pellet size and total weight of pellets per load.
I was a bit surprised that the nipples were thin and long. Had expected four winged musket caps, but had to use 1075 caps that were a bit too big for the nipples, but when squeezed they worked all right.
Suggestions welcome.

Ask The Experts / arbors
« on: May 25, 2018, 01:35:26 PM »
I've been scrutinizing photos of dismantled Colts (1849 and 1851:s) and think (just think) I've seen two variants of grease tracks in the arbor. One design is a trapeze thread along the arbor and the other possible design is a number of radially turned ditches.
Were there two designs, or have I interpreted the photos all wrongly?

Welcome Wagon / Newbie again

I've been hanging out on the Remi '58 for 5 yrs. Saw that most of the active guys also belong here, so thought it better to toe in.
I got 7 originals and shoot them all pretty regularly. No proper Colt, but my Manhattan Navy, Series I, S/N 515 might just qualify me as a member here (there's a Manhattan thread on, but it's void). It's a very nice shooter.
The others are: one French and one British flintlock pistol (18th cent) and one Belgian/Swedish caplock rifled pistol 19th cent), one Smith carbine (cavalry), one '58 Remi NMA and one Remi Navy Riders DA.
Like tinkering with what I drag home from auctions.
Shoot in my back yard.
