I finished this up over the weekend. It is a pre-carve stock that had some water damage when I was working on it several years ago. I got it out to see if anything could be done to save it. Luckily, there was still wood to be removed and a lot of the staining got sanded away. I stained the stock the "old timey" Winchester color; normally I don't stain walnut stocks, grips, etc.
-
I also put a Buffington barrel sight on the rifle.
-
I had to make the trigger plate and trigger guard from stuff I had.
-
A friend suggested the sight hood, so I polished up the only one I had and put it on too. Kinda a "poor man's" globe sight.
-
as finished
-
The modified parts....extended tang so I could put the tang sight on.
-
Receiver with added hanger tacked on for forearm attachment.
-
I like it.
Interesting way to add a second attachment point without using a band. How does it shoot?

I just KNEW someone would ask me that! I just put it together Saturday, and I don't have any 45-70 loaded up yet. Also need to cast some different weight boolits to try. That hanger was suggested to me by a long range BPCR shooter. This way the barrel is free-floating. Also, the stock doesn't allow for a band, so it was either this or a barrel wedge/tenon.

Just in case someone is wondering.....I did save the original stock and furniture. It was complete, but had lots of nicks and dings. Also, everything had been re-blued sometime before I got the rifle.

Very good-looking rifle in a different sort of way, Mazo.
-
Looks good to me! L@.
-
An interesting, not unattractive mod.
-
Nice!

Scooby, yes I used the old timey Winchester stain/oil sanded in with many coats. Sorry to be so tardy in getting back to the thread.
-
This is an old post, however i would like to resurrect it for the originality of the trapdoor project.
Where did you find the stock?
-
Ted, the stock was a pre-carve ordered from George Peterson (Treebone Carving) a few years ago. I was working on it when we had an indoor "flood" while we were away and the stock got wet. When we got home the wood was swollen, stained, rusty. I was so upset/disappointed that I set it aside for several months before finally deciding to see if I could rescue the project.

A very nice job there, Mazo

Very cool. Gotta say that I find it interesting to say the least. I would like to pursue this as a project for myself. Thanks for the info on the stock.
Tis what I need ... nother project 🤣
-
Thanks, keep us in the loop.

I went through most of the PhotoBucket mess and restored some of the pictures, the ones I could find now.
-
Congratulations on a fine recovery Trapdoor Mazo ,turned out great.

Yes, nice job there, Mazo. But a long time. So by now you probably have shot it ???
We're all eagerly waiting for the range report, if you don't mind me saying so.
-
Nothing serious, just some offhand plinking with the lighter weight bullets.
-
I know this is old (again) but I came across some pictures that were deleted in the upgrade. Here is the receiver with the forearm hanger.
-
And the way the stock started out.
-
A different view. The staining has started. Sorry for the double post.

Posing in the sun.
