This is a new thread created to remind us of many of the events in our great country's past history that were shaped or affected by black powder guns, and Colts in particular! If you are an amateur historian, please feel free to add any events you know about!

President Abraham Lincoln appoints Union General Henry Halleck to the position of general in chief of the Union Army.

Confederate raider William Quantrill leads a massacre of 150 men and boys in Lawrence, Kansas.
1864
After a week of heavy raiding, the Confederate cruiser Tallahassee claims six Union ships captured.

If I had a time machine Id go back and get that little murderin weasal Quantrill and his whole psycho crew. No honor whatever with that crowd. The type of men it would have been a pleasure to eradicate.
Even Grant said that Forrest was the greatest talent to emerge during the Civil War. Greatly underutilized by the Confederacy (he wasnt a gentleman, you see). At Sandhurst they taught his methods clear into the 20th Century. The man was a genius and a stand-up fellow.

Camp Grant was in Arizona, near present day Safford. William Henry McCarty used the alias "Bonney" when he fled to New Mexico after killing Cahill. I've been fortunate enough to have traced his path through New Mexico. Lots of that country looks close to the same as it did back in that day.

In the Roanoke Island colony, Ellinor and Ananias Dare become parents of a baby girl whom they name Virginia, the first English child born in what would become the United States.

John White, the leader of 117 colonists sent in 1587 to Roanoke Island (North Carolina) to establish a colony, returns from a trip to England to find the settlement deserted. No trace of the settlers is ever found.

Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart's headquarters is raided by Union troops of the 5th New York and 1st Michigan cavalries.
1864
Union General William T. Sherman sends General Judson Kilpatrick to raid Confederate lines of communication outside Atlanta. The raid is unsuccessful.

Also today....August 23, 1814 .....Dolly Madison saves the Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington from the British....who ransacked the White House on August 24th. The painting still hangs in the White House.

Nathaniel Bacon leads an uprising against English Governor William Berkeley at Jamestown, Virginia, resulting in the settlement being burned to the ground. Bacon's Rebellion came in response to the governor's repeated refusal to defend the colonists against the Indians.

William Becknell leads a group of traders from Independence, Mo., toward Santa Fe on what would become the Santa Fe Trail.

Confederate forces under General John Bell Hood evacuate Atlanta in anticipation of the arrival of Union General William T. Sherman's troops.

killed more Americans per minute than any other fight we ever fought. The dead American count racks up quick when we fight each other.

The Union Army of the Cumberland passes through Chattanooga as they chase after the retreating Confederates. The Union troops will soon be repulsed at the Battle of Chickamauga.

Confederates at Carnifex Ferry, Virginia, fall back after being attacked by Union troops. The action is instrumental in helping preserve western Virginia for the Union.

Took my kid to the gravesite, one of the weeks he was on Blanca the Kenworth with me. Very cool history, and story behind the traveling headstone....
