Today, September 21st, is our forum "Snap-A-Cap" day. If you have the opportunity, please snap a cap and drink a toast to our fallen "Sunset Riders" members who have gone on ahead of us and feel free to post a pic or two if you wish.
-
I'm happy to do that in remembrance of our friends.
-
Caps will be snapping tonight at my place!
-
Due to the extreme fire danger here in WA State, I don't foresee snapping a cap.
We are forecast for a mini deluge on Wednesday of 1"-2" of rain here, with Westerly Pacific Ocean winds of 20 mph, which will be a godsend. We have had less than 1/2" rain in the past 3 months.
I have already downed a few in remembrance this afternoon. Whiskey/branch water (Chehalis River)/rocks (made from River water).
Life is good in the boontoolies.
Salut!
Jim

Prepping for a salute to fallen members Jim, Steve and Richard...

After snapping a cap and drinking a toast to all three...

I would have liked to snap a cap for each of our Sunset Riders, but when living in suburbia, I don't need to be pushing my luck...
-
Awesome salute to our brothers.
-
Gentlemen, we are once again fast approaching our annual "Snap-A-Cap Day" in remembrance of our fallen comrades, adding to this year's list the late Jim Padberg, a.k.a "Sourdough". We will miss his wealth of knowledge, humor, and overall friendliness as we salute those who have gone on ahead. Please hoist up a toast of your favorite beverage, and if the opportunity avails, snap a cap on the evening of September 21st in remembrance!

Cap'n, I will be glad to do just that. My first time. Glad I saw this post. Thanks.

Man, it come around fast. Can't believe a year has passed again.
-
I might add...if you are an imbiber, Jim's favorite toasting accessory was Early Times whiskey. Just sayin'.

Preparing for the 21st, I found a rare picture of Steve (aka DD4). He kept an extremely low internet, mail, email and text profile (and wizely so). I took this picture on a late night in Cheyenne, after some drinks at his Veteran club, with the unspoken agreement not to spread it. Now then, things have changed and he cannot be reached or hurt any more, I therefore feel free to share it wih you guys. He was a really good man, who had had a lot of bad luck. Wife and I remember him with fondness.
-
Len, thanks for sharing! So nice to put a face to the name!
-
Great picture Len. Thanks for sharing it with us.
-
You are right, Steve was a very private man who did very nice things for people.

I know he was extremely nice to me.

Just a reminder; tomorrow, September 21st, is our annual Colt Country "Snap-a-Cap Day" in memory of our fallen comrades. Snap a cap (if possible in your neighborhood) and hoist a toast of your favorite beverage (yes, milk counts!) in memory of our brethren who have gone on ahead...this year, in addition to the gentlemen listed in the Roll Call section, we honor Jim Padberg (sourdough). If you can't snap a cap, you can pop a balloon, pop a paper bag, or even light off a black cat firecracker...just something to honor the fallen. And then, of course, take a photo or two and maybe a quick word about it here.
-

I know he was extremely nice to me.
He up and gave you a G&G, if I recall correctly. A kingly gift.

Yes he did. It's one I'll never sell. I bought my dragoon from him and he threw in a bunch of other period stuff.
-
I've done the rites. This morning I shot 6 rounds at a DD4 target (2x4"). There was a slight drizzle but nothing to stop the ritual.
-
Late pm I added to the rites by raising a wee dram of whiskey for the guys
-
Post removed by Len. Wrong thread.
-
My neighbors will be mad, but I'll snap a cap later today for the guys. I'll also hoist a glass of whiskey. *k>
-
We will be joining all of you later today.
-
Snapped a cap with my REB 44 and.......
Snapped a few more caps with my PSA Dagger.
with thanks, love and respect.
-
I think the sunset today was a great tribute to our friends who have passed on.
-
And my tribute to them.
-
Mission accomplished.
Been saving that one last snort of Jameson's just for the occasion. Charged one nipple of "Old Faithful" and lowered the hammer on torpedo tube Number One, with the cap being on Number Two, had a wee nip o' the Jameson's and stepped out into the back yard. Despite there being a full harvest moon tonight, the thick cloud cover made the walk out to behind the garage in the inky blackness like spelunking without a light. I pulled the hammer back to full cock, each click of the bolt sounding loud as a blacksmith working a horseshoe...then it was silent as a tomb except for the crickets...pointing Old Faithful skyward, I muttered under my breath; "Richard, Doc, DD and Jim...for you, boys". Then; CRACK! You might be surprised at how loud a single cap can be in the dead quiet of the evening.
Walking back inside, I set Old Faithful down after extracting the cap, and the smell of spent priming compound came wafting up unmistakably. Hoisting the glass again I solemnly offered a toast, this time saying aloud, "Boys", and down the hatch we go.
You are missed, and it's been an honor to ride with you...

Beautiful tributes, boys. Thank you. )lI
-
I popped a cap on my G&G for all of our fallen members.
-
Good call, Hawg. So, I used a Griswold too. Three pops in salute and commemoration.
-
Great tributes gentlemen, specially yours Capt.
I popped one cap out on the patio in my Goonerized Army, and had a shot in one of the glasses Jim gave me.
RIP men. We'll see you on the other side.
-
No pictures. I snapped several caps today. Tonight is the time for the Bourbon.
-
Thanks to all who honored our fallen members, each in their individual ways.
-
OK guys, here we go again !
21st of Sept is just around the corner.
Time to prepare for our homage to absent friends.
Make sure you got caps (BP and RBs, if possible in your area) and your prefered beverage for toasting. Caps are mandatory. Photos are appreciated.
Lets do it properly!
-
Yes, reminders were forthcoming, but Len beat me to it! Good job, Len! And good memory as well!

Given enough time, everyone catches their packet. It’s the only thing in life that comes with a double your money back guarantee.
I’m in for the Twenty-First and will launch six of the remaining eight pounds of 45-190S (Accurate Molds) that I bought from DD4 way back when.
“Then out spake brave Horatius, the captain of the Gate:
To every man upon this earth death cometh soon or late.
And how can man die better than facing fearful odds,
for the ashes of his fathers and the temples of his Gods.”

Good on ya, G! A fine tribute to Steve, there! If they have telescopes up yonder, I know he'll be watching.
-
I've got me some of them. I'll load the Sheriff. Hell, I may even try to get Smokey's '58 put back together for the tribute and use it.
-
Not being home today, I'm not able to snap a cap, but my good friend Jim "Sourdough" is in my thoughts.
-
Duty accomplished.
Nice early fall day. Sun and a wind that kept the mosquitos away.
Made some considerable smoke signals to absent friends with bangs and fragrant smell. Felt good.
-
This evening's tribute will be threefold. I will be using the Whitneyville I got from Jim to pop a cap. I will also be having a shot of whiskey in the "Attitude Adjuster" shot glass that Jim gave me, and I'll be pouring the whiskey from my Grandfather's flask. I will then use the powder dribbler that Em made me to put a little powder in my ash tray and touch it off. Thus I will honor Jim, Em, and my grandfather at the same time.

In memory and honor of those that have passed before us, especially DD4lifeusmc (Steve) who I had contact with on numerous occasions and have several black powder items I purchased from him, I'm going to light off some FFFFg powder in the pan my new English Heavy Dragoon pistol. I can't load and fire it in my backyard so a flash in the pan will have to do.
-
Launched some 190 grain conical and .454’s in commemoration of our pals who have passed over into Glory Land (AKA Valhalla). Later tonight I’ll toss a double Bushmill’s in honor of them and all of you guys, too. Saludo!
-
Thanks to all of you for your tributes to our fallen comrades! :usa-flag-89:
Tonight could have been better; it's been overcast, cool and drizzly all day. But damn the torpedoes. I've really been missing our departed friends, but especially my good friend Emery. So, with that in mind, I decided to do a special tribute in his honor tonight.
What would Em choose, I wondered? Then it struck me. Not only was he a revolver guy, he was also a muzzleloader guy. What better to honor him than a muzzleloader?
So, I chose my Lyman .50 cal Plains Pistol, and a snort of Jameson's...

After a silent toast to all our past friends, I took a slug of the Liquid Courage and rambled out to the back yard with the Plains, capped with an ancient Remington #11 from Lord knows how long ago, hoisted it skyward, and with a "Godspeed, men!"...CRACK!
Anyone who tells you a cap isn't loud in the night sky is full of it, or has never tried it. Or both.
That done, I headed back indoors and took this pic...the Plains alongside the marvelous Sharps Emery sold me at a bargain basement price...

...and then finished off the Liquid Courage.
All that was left was an empty glass, and this:

...which ended up in the Arlington of BP, representing each year we've snapped a cap:

On occasion, Mrs. Captain will ask what those funny bits of metal are for, and I will say, "For friends". Not sure she understands, but she leaves them alone.
Godspeed, my friends. Godspeed.

I used my 51 navy and fired an extra one for my wife. The navy is the only bp gun my wife got to shoot and she liked it.
