As my first post I could find no better way than to introduce my presentation case Walker. I made the presentation case from an old silverware box. It displays an early Uberti 1847 Colt Walker, below it a fav Colt 2nd Gen 1851 Navy which I recieved as you see it. I added some accesories I had on hand including an early bullet mold.

Excellent job on the display box, and some damn fine pistolas ya got there! Thanks for sharing! Can you give us more details on the guns, as in year of manufacture, history (if known) and such? Oh...and praise from Scooby is high praise indeed! Just sayin'.

Thank you kindly Scooby, very much appreciated. I'm no professional by any means but I am wildly enthusiastic Colt and Remington percussion pistol disciple. Here's a pic of the case before the work began, an old silverware box of the type many of our grandmothers had for 'company'.
Dang nice mister. It is a very fine display. I would be proud to have such a set resting on my coffee table.

Thanks for the encouraging words! The Colt 2nd Gen Navy was made in 1973, I got it from an online dealer and someone poured a lot of love and care onto that gun. The action is perfect, as if it were tuned. I also think the gun was 'aged' but not in the sense of simply submerging it into a chemical bath. The previous owner took a lot of time plumming the finish and carefully fading the case colors. The result is a subtle patina that is in my eyes very attractive. Coupled with the fine action this one is a keeper.
The Walker came to me through a colleague and though not marked as such I'm pretty confident that it's an early Uberti. Back in the 80's Uberti produced a special charcoal blue finish which was thin and delicate, easliy marred but perfect for applying a gentle patina. In fact the Walker is still a work in progress as it's not quite where I want it to be. I use a Lead-Away cloth to dull and slowly remove finish. It's a lot more work than submerging into a finish stripping chemical but I think the results are infinitely more controllable and appealing.

Nice job on the case and great looking pistols. It looks like the Walker has a taller front sight than what you normally see. I find that interesting.

The only thing I can think of to account for the taller front sight is that it's an older ASM gun.

Truly a pair to be proud of! Kinda hard to tell from the pix, but is the squareback trigger guard and backstrap silver-plated on the Navy? Some of the early ones have that and it knocks my socks off! My 2nd Dragoon has one but most of the silver is worn through to brass (this one has been rode hard and put away wet, believe me!)

Yes, the backstrap and trigger guard are indeed silver plated. Photographing this gun is tricky in that too much light results in reflection, which you definitely don't want with metal surfaces, I still haven't gotten the right picture of this one yet but when I do I'll post a couple.
Regarding your trigger guard and backstrap- what are they made of ? What I mean is, is it possible to strip off the brass to reveal some other metal beneath ? I don't know if I'm making myself clear but I got mine aged as you see it. When examining the bottom of the grip strap where they applied some kind of bluing agent. I was considering removing this applied finish, but as I look carefully at a small wear point I think I see an almost copper colored metal.
Are the brass parts, brass ? Or something else ?
If I try to remove this blued finish I don't want to be left with a copper colored backstrap!

Thanks Dave, I took it on as a project, I think it came out ok and now am inspired to do another one, this time a Dragoon and 1860 Army double cased set. Will post pics when I get started.

I agree the case looks fantastic. With regard to the trigger guard and backstrap, I believe all Colt 2nd Generation 1851 Navy's had brass trigger guards and brass backstraps. The vast majority of them were of the squareback style and were silver plated. There were small numbers of plain brass squareback, plain brass round trigger guards and silver plated brass round trigger guards.
There might be a copper plating underneath the silver, I know that nickel plating often uses a copper layer underneath so I guess it's possible silver plating might also use it. Also be aware that silver plating can tarnish to the point that it actually looks like blued steel.
