I made this in the late '70s as I was a piper in the Shrine Pipes and Drums.

I bought the dirk as a kit from Track of the Wolf; it was cast (the blade) by Peter Allen in Minnesota.

I made the sheath around a wood core, covered with deer skin.

I made the top and tip of the sheath from sheet brass, formed and soldered together. It might not have been the best to use deer skin as it got scuffed up over the years, but at that time it was what I had.

When you say you were a piper, do you mean you play the bagpipes?

Yes, I played for about 25 years in the band. I had surgery for a brain tumor and that damaged some facial nerves so I couldn't play any more. I still have my 'pipes, would like to sell them but they are pretty high end....ivory half-mounted Hardie. That was one good thing my former spouse did for me, bought me the set with some of her inheritance!

Thanks much! It took some filing, sanding and polishing to finish off the parts, but I think it turned out nicely for a plain dirk. And some friends have remarked that it was like walking into a museum when they visited our house the first time! It's not, just that there are lots of old things displayed (other than the residents!) (7+"

Wow, that's awesome Em! I don't know if I'm more impressed about you playing the bagpipes, or your knife making abilities!
I've looked at bagpipes. High end ones are very expensive. Being of Scotch/Irish decent, I always thought it would be cool to learn to play. I did fool around with the accordion for a while.

I looked at TOTW and it seems they don't carry that cast steel blade, only a forged one from India. I didn't see any of the cast brass pieces either.
