Title: 1851 navy .44 sheriff Opinion?
Post by: DragoonRick on February 12, 2023, 06:46:22 PM
Do any of you have experience with or opinions about those  .36 or .44 1851 navy “sheriff” revolvers. I’ve been wanting one for some time.  I even have a 1858 Pietta .44 sheriff.  It is some compact compared to the regular 1858.
I’m interested in the 1851 sheriff as it’s compact.  But not a  brass frame

The 1851 Sheriff model will just be a shortened version of the standard 1851. Everything is the same except for the barrel length. I had one of them and the balance is good. The grip size is identical to a Ruger so if you like that feel, then Pietta is for you. If you want one that is closer to an original 1851, then Uberti is the better choice. The Pietta will require a little less fiddling to make it work optimally where the Uberti will have a short arbor that is best if you correct it. There are threads that show you how to take care of that. Once that is done, however, you will have a darn good pistol.

Also, if you want a .44, then your only option is the Pietta.

Either way you go, the Sheriff's model is a good one.

Yes, with the Pietta, it's a little easier to put together a 19th century version of the "pistol pack"  ( of Dan Wesson fame)!

Rick, I have a .44 "Sheriff" of sorts. Bought it from ShotgunDave. It is an 1860 Pietta frame with and octagonal short barrel. It is well balanced. I also bought an 1860 long barrel so now this gun is a convertible.

Rick, I have a Pietta 61 Navy sheriff in .36 cal. I've never fired it. In fact, I don't think it's ever been fired. It's sitting in the safe collecting dust. It even has the desirable blued steel backstrap and trigger guard.

Shotgun,  it is a great looking revolver👍👍
Is it a five shot like the police model?
Unused it will always be “new”

It's a 6 shooter Rick. It's the same as a 51 Navy except for the barrel. Might be time for it to find a new home.

Hay guys, I have three sheriff models. One is a 1860 5" in 44cal, and the 5" Colt model 51 in 44 cal. They're steel frame models made by Pietta. I have one model 1858 Pietta 5" bbl. I've never fired any of the three. I'm thanking I may haft to sell the 1860 and the 1851 in 44 cal, the 1858 I'm thanking I may hang onto it for a little while longer. Soon as I can get pics up I'll let everyone see them.

I had the occasion to buy this Pietta fantasy gun from Midway a ittle while back when it was on sale. I have yet to shoot it. I was taken by its compact size and .44 caliber.
It is the first Pietta I have ever purchased. I am not a fan of the external production marks and somewhat rough finish, but the timing and lockup are perfect. Now just how to figure out how to load it...😂

Good to hear from you, OF!
How to load...you can load it off the gun using a 'Tower of Power' or similar press. Or, you can load it Johnnie Roper style by loading off-gun using a mallet and wooden dowel to seat the ball. Or, you can load on-gun by sliding on a barrel from a '51 complete with loading lever, then attach the original barrel. The world's your oyster. Go to it!

One of those palm presses in 44 and load on the gun.

Don’t know what those are commonly called.  Anyone have the term?

Nice, with the fluted cylinder it almost looks like an 1862 Pocket Police model.
