Off-Topic Discussion / Bass Reeves. Lawman.

I recently learned that an old partner of mine from work is the great, or slightly more than great nephew... of Bass Reeves, the legendary lawman who may have been the inspiration for the Lone Ranger. My friend donated some of Reeves guns to maybe the Cody Museum. My friend was always into old west history and such. He wore cowboy boots and hat to work all the time. I am sure he must have told me of his relation to Reeves over the years we worked together, but it never really sank in. I ran into him a couple of weeks ago at our credit union and the topic came up. He filled me in on some of the long forgotten details he told me of years ago. He did add that he had donated several pieces to I am guessing... the Cody Museum. He is a quiet and very interesting guy.

Pocket Models / Two Pockets today.

I couldn't resist any longer putting off getting another revolver. Today I was up in the Gold Country, sort of celebrating an event from long ago. I walked into a gun shop and went to the black powder section. I looked at a few rifles and stuff. Then I stepped over to the handgun display case. There were three pristine second generation Colts there. One was an 1851. It was beautiful and near mint condition. I thought about getting it. But I already have one that I bought forty years ago. So I passed on that. But just below the 1851 was an 1862 Pocket Navy, and an 1862 Pocket Police. The Pocket Navy had a small scratch on the grip... no big deal.
I asked to see the Pocket Navy, and then the Police also. Why, I don't know. I have two Police revolvers already, one Colt and the other Uberti. My Valentine, the boss, was with me. She turned to me and asked if I was getting another gun. I said no, that I was just looking... She said "Don't you already have this one?", pointing to the Police. I said I did and I bought it with my last paycheck when I retired. And I reminded her of the Uberti version also. Then I asked her "Which one do you like?". She pointed at the Police. I picked it up and handed it to her to let her get the feel of it. Then I handed her the Navy. She said the Police "feels better in my hands, plus it is prettier than the other one."
I asked the store clerk about the revolvers. He said a collector had stopped in the shop with five Colts and dropped them off to sell. One was already gone. We talked a few minutes more and then I asked if they were firm on the asking price. He said they were. And then I asked about a price for both.... Separately they were just about sky high. The clerk said he'd have to call the owner and see what he would accept. I thanked the clerk. He took a few steps toward the phone and then stops and turns to me. "What are you offering for the pair?" he asked. I paused and then just pulled a low ball figure out of thin air.
My Valentine asked if I was nuts... The clerk asked if I was serious. I said I was and repeated the figure. The clerk almost was not going to make the phone call. He talked it over with his partner in the shop. Neither one of them thought the owner would accept my ridiculous offer.
Meanwhile, Valentine is asking what I'm going to do with two more guns...especially since I have two Police models. I kept my cool and came up with something really believable.
In the background we could hear the phone conversation. The clerk asked for the owner of the revolvers... he wasn't at home and wouldn't be for a couple of hours. The clerk explained the reason for the call and gave the person on the other end of the phone my offer. And then we hear a loud "What? Who is this? Go ahead? Can I put that on the sales ticket? And your name? Ok, I'll just put that on the ticket." He hung up the phone, turned to me and said I'll write you up for the sale. His partner asked who he had spoken to. The clerk said he spoke to the owner's wife and she said to go ahead and sell them. The partner said to make sure she was quoted on the inventory tag/ sales record.
While the store guys were scratching their heads over what just happened,
I had to promise Valentine she could shoot the Police model. She was satisfied and complimented me on my bold stroke. I paid for the revolvers. They were put in their respective boxes and handed to me. I said my thanks and headed toward the door. My Valentine and I were last seen driving off into the sunset by the guys in the gun shop. I paid just a very thin shade over the original prices for both. It was a good day. 
I think they might lock the store's door if they see me coming their way again...

Army Models / 1860's on television show

I am a fan of old black and white television Western series/ shows. Tonight I watched "Laramie", season 2, episode 12, 1960, on the Western Channel. Now I know it is television and all, and a lot of the shows should be taken with a pound of salt. 
Tonight's show I found interesting. Other than the time lines being a bit off, the story was pretty good.
Tonight's installment included two Colt 1860 Army models with extended barrels... almost 18-20" total length. They were said to be "percussion" and fired a round ball. I noticed when the light hit the sides of the barrels just right, the joint or seam where the barrels were extended showed. I think there was also a small rear sight probably around mid barrel. These guns were "dueling pistols".
One scene showed the hero 'loading' his revolver using a powder flask, maybe a wad and of course the round ball. It all looked pretty good. And then I noticed he had loaded everything on the wrong side of the barrel, left side instead of the right side. There was no way he could have rotated the loaded cylinder past the forcing cone on the barrel, to bring the charged chamber under the loading lever. But being the hero he was, he just pressed the ram down into the empty chamber directly below the ram, and continued loading.
Well, the duel takes place and the hero declines to shoot his adversary. Probably a good thing too.

How do you post a photo?
My kids are not home to do this for me. I am a Neanderthal when it comes to this stuff. I poked around looking for instructions. I couldn't tell the difference between them... if I found them, and the Rosetta Stone. ???
I tried the copy and paste stuff, but it didn't work.

Patersons / No longer on my list...

The Paterson belt model is no longer on my list. I finally got one today. It is a Uberti version and is pristine. I do intend on shooting it, just don't know when. I noticed the loading port seems a bit small fro the round ball. I'll have to give that some thought. 
I do have an engraved Colt Paterson #5 belt model (new), that I picked up a couple of years ago. But that one will never see a grain of powder. It is a work of art.
I'll have to figure out how to post a picture... I am a dinosaur.

Army Models / Stainless 1860 Colt

I recently aquired a stainless Colt 1860 Army. I noticed that the serial number on the wedge does not match the rest of the revolver. I know it is like a needle in a haystack chance... Any stainless Colt owners out there with a mis-matched wedge?
I think it would be kind of interesting to locate the other 1860 owner and possibly swap the wedges.

I just aquired a beautiful Stainless Colt 1860 Army. I noticed the serial number on the wedge does not match the numbers on the rest of the revolver. It does not affect the function and it won't change my life. But I am curious to know if anyone out there with a stainless 1860 has an odd numbered wedge. I think it would be fun to try to track down the proper wedge for my revolver.
