Powder / American Pioneer Powder ?
« on: February 12, 2021, 09:57:51 AM »
Oh boy, what you don't find when you reach further back into the old powder cubbord. I found an unopened container of FFFg by American Pioneer Powder. It is a BP substitute but can be used volume for volume with BP ,though it says on the plastic container. Has anybody used this powder before? Is it safe in my BP revolvers? I probably bought it for my long guns at the time since I didn't have any BP revolvers then.

Knives, Swords, 'hawks, etc / My combat knife
« on: February 10, 2021, 12:44:39 PM »
Hope I can attach this picture correctly. Story behind this knife. My Dad carried it in WWII and he passed it on to me and I carried it in Vietnam with the 173 rd Airborne Brigade on my first combat tour in the Nam. The jungle ate away at the sheath and I had to make do by wrapping the sheath in green Army duct tape.

Hunting / mazo kid's Coyote advice.
« on: January 03, 2021, 01:53:25 AM »
Lol, on another topic, mazo kid advised me to get out and start calling coyotes as long as I cant go deer hunting.
I ran across this old phot of me holding a 60 pound plus yote that was one of three in the pack that stepped out a 150 yards from me in our hayfield. I had a broken foot at the time from my wife's horse running over me when jumping a crick as I led him across. Long story. Anyhow, I just needed to get out so dressed up the golf cart and grabbed to 22-250 and sat back at the edge of the field. I never had much luck calling yotes in but three more have made it into my crosshairs while deer or turkey hunting. I really do need to learn how to call so that I am not just telling them that I am a hunter trying to sound like a coyote. Besides mouth calls, I have electronic calls for them too but I might be over doing it. We do have a lot of yotes around my place and you can hear them at night. What a symphony.

Air Power / air gun challenge
« on: December 30, 2020, 05:21:31 AM »
Let's face it. Doesn't just shooting at little dots on a piece of paper get pretty boring after awhile. I changed all that with my two air rifles. I now place a piece of cardboard up at 50 feet and then put a couple drops of honey on it and just wait until those pesty house flies show up for their " Last Supper" Now you have something to look forward to when Spring and Summer rolls around.

Gunsmithing/Parts & Repairs/Refinishing / barrel/cylinder gap measuring
« on: December 27, 2020, 10:34:39 AM »
As a result of my having a gunsmith work on a Pietta 1851 Navy for me a question has arisen. When I got the revolver back, he said he opened up the barrel/cylinder gap because there was none. I did not tell him to do this but now I am worried he over stepped his bounds. What is the proper way to measure the gap and what is the recommended gap distance? Do you measure with the hammer at rest, half cock or full cock? Not only did he open the gap, he cut the forcing cone at an angle so the gap is about 3 times bigger on one side from the other. There are gunsmiths and then there are gunsmiths.

Percussion Caps and Primers / CCI #11 Magnum caps ?
« on: December 26, 2020, 01:28:55 PM »
I received some  CCI #11 magnum caps for Christmas. Will there be any problem using these in my  Pietta 1851 Navy and Pietta 1860 Army ? Both have the Ampco nipples on the cylinders. Somebody bought me about a 1000 of these magnums and I can't return them.

NEW MEMBER CHECK-IN / Howdy from Ohio
« on: December 24, 2020, 12:46:40 PM »
I've been glancing at your forum for a few days now and decided to join in. I bought a couple BP revolvers some years ago and have only shot them a few times since. One, a 1851 Navy I sold and a 1858 Remington Navy that I kept. Wishing now that I would have kept the 1851 Navy made by Uberti and ordered from Cimarron. Recently though I just purchased a Pietta 1851 Navy and a Pietta 1860 Army. Hoping to get in a lot more BP revolver shooting then I did in the past.
Well, anyhow, hope everybody has a very Merry Christmas and are staying safe from this darn virus.
