Percussion Caps and Primers / Longevity of homemade caps
« on: March 01, 2022, 03:46:33 PM »
I started making my own caps about a year ago. I finally found a recipe that works. Now I have 99+% success. I usually load my caps one week and shoot them the next. Five months ago I decided to see how long I could store them and still work. I went shooting today and shot six of those caps. All six fired, one needed a second strike to fire. I have had this issue with my homemade caps as well as commercial caps. I think that I don’t have them properly seated. My plan is to shoot six of these older caps every time I go shooting and report the results. I will use this thread for all of the reports for easy comparison.

General Discussion / Nipple Question
« on: June 13, 2021, 07:20:58 AM »
I have read that some type of lube should be put on the nipple thread after removing and cleaning. Do you remove and clean the nipples after every shooting session?  If not then how often? If you clean after each shooting session is the lube necessary and why?

Wads, Lubes, Patches, Cleaning Supplies, etc / Cleaning the cylinder

I removed the nipples when I was cleaning the cylinder after shooting today. I noticed some fowling inside the cylinder just below the nipples. Is this normal?

Powder / SCHUETZEN Vs Pyrodex
« on: March 17, 2021, 06:21:30 PM »
I found a local dealer that sells Schuetzen BP. I bought some 3f and went shooting today. Temperature was 65 and sunny. No wind. I shot 48 rounds today and didn’t notice any difference in accuracy. I did notice less felt recoil. The barrel was slightly cleaner with the BP than the pyrodex. The load was 24 grains of Schuetzen with a soy wax pill over the powder and a 375 round ball on top. The cleaning was about the same bp vs pyrodex. This is a picture of the barrel after shooting the Schuetzen bp.

Powder / SCHUETZEN BLACK POWDER

Has anyone used this powder?  I don’t know anything about it. I found a local dealer who sells this but he requires a scheduled appointment to buy it.

Wads, Lubes, Patches, Cleaning Supplies, etc / Soy wax pill
« on: February 10, 2021, 03:24:14 PM »
I did my first test pour and cut 12 pills. Pure soy wax. I used a 357 case as the punch. I cut the rim off so I can punch out the pills. The appearance is good, round, stable, slick and dry. I just did a full size pour and I am waiting for it to cool.

Wads, Lubes, Patches, Cleaning Supplies, etc / Soy wax update
« on: February 02, 2021, 03:11:55 PM »
I took my navy and went shooting today. 65 degrees when I left home 75 when I got back. I bought some soy wax flakes to try as a lube. I had read about a wax pill that people had made that they put over the powder and underneath the ball. The soy works good except the size of the flakes is inconsistent. Very inconsistent! I think the barrel was cleaner with the wax over the powder than a wad over the powder. I will try to post some pictures later.

Powder / Powder storage
« on: January 29, 2021, 11:32:22 AM »
I have just started shooting a Pietta 1851 Navy. Do you leave your powder in the flask after shooting or do you return it to the original container? Is there a safety issue or quality issues if left in the flask? Does Pyrodex store better then real BP?

Navy Models / Range Report 1851 Navy
« on: January 28, 2021, 03:07:08 PM »
I went to the desert this morning to try out my new 1851. 60 degrees, overcast, and windy this morning. The target was at 16 yards as measured by my range finder. 23 grains of Pyrodex, Cabella’s felt wad over the powder, and a .375 round lead ball. I used a rest on my portable shooting bench. This target was the first one shot.

Wads, Lubes, Patches, Cleaning Supplies, etc / Soy Wax
« on: January 24, 2021, 08:12:10 PM »
Has anyone used soy wax to coat their felt wads? I saw a utube video where he soaked his wads in nothing but soy wax. Most of the time it is a combination of beeswax and tallow, or some slight variation. Any ideas or thoughts?

I want to thank everyone for the information that has been given. I ordered my 1851 from EMF. I ordered online on Friday, Monday a representative called me to confirm my order. The pistol arrived on Wednesday. The friendly service and the quick response was fantastic. I will give this company my business in the future.

Navy Models / Recommend load for 1851 .36 Navy
« on: January 18, 2021, 03:46:12 PM »
I plan on using a .375 round ball. I have seen listings for 15 grains to 32 grains. I don’t think I want to create a ‘magnum’ just a good useful and fun load to shoot. What are your recommendations?

I have ordered a 1851 .36 Navy. I have read that petroleum lubes should not be used. What type of oil do you use on your pistols? What grease do you use on the cylinder pin?
