Conversions / KIRST CONVERTER PROBLEMS
« on: February 04, 2019, 02:27:18 PM »
I usually try and go back through the threads to find a solution to a problem. I don't like to ask questions that have already been asked. So if I missed it, my apologies. Kirst Converter installed, recoil shield cut to accept cartridges, this is on a Pietta 1851 Navy Sheriff's model in .44 cal. PROBLEM #1) With the ring and loading gate removed and the pistol fully assembled, timing is excellent, like butter, solid lockup. Put the ring on and reassemble...timing problems. PROBLEM #2) With a cartridge case loaded (45 Schofield), no clearance for cartridge head or very little I should say. I think the ring is absolutely the problem. The case head clearance could probably be addressed with a file. Maybe shaving a little off the foot of the ring? dunno. Any suggestions? Thanks Dave.  ;)

Off-Topic Discussion / 7.62 Tokarev
« on: March 16, 2017, 11:41:57 PM »
Yeah I did it. Finally bought a Cold War Replica!  ???I have been looking at them over the fence for several years now, until I found out that Zastava in Serbia, is manufacturing new production Tokarev pistols made on CNC machining! 9mm and 7.62x25 available now for under $250.00! (jh. Other sites advertise surplus Tokarevs made in the 50's, for more than a brand new one costs ??? It will go nice with the 2000 rds of Bulgarian surplus I bought 7 years ago. I had plans of building a Polish PPS-43 SMG...fell thru! ^j)She should be here Monday! Of course I have already ordered xtra magazines and 1(EA) Russian flap holster and 1(EA) Polish holster. I love the smell of cosmoline and musty leather :-*

Navy Models / New Pietta Grip Frame?
« on: December 09, 2016, 03:09:58 PM »
O.K., Before I beat a dead horse I did go back 2 years and researched for any information on Piettas new grip frame geometry for the '51 Navy. I may have missed it somewhere so please don't beat me up too bad. I have been modifying my Pietta frames on every one I buy. And to tell you the truth, it is a bit taxing on me. Photos of the newer grip frame would be great. How do you know whether or not you are getting "old stock" when you purchase? (??...Thanks

BPCR Reloading / 45 Schofield loads
« on: November 28, 2016, 04:05:57 PM »
Whew!..... Had to get off the firearms blogs! I don't like rudeness from a man, I won't tolerate it! Good to be back amongst Friends!
I want to load some SCHOFIELDS! For Kirst Converters! Really wanna try some Trailboss.  I have been experimenting with some smokeless and Black loads, as well as some in 45 Cowboy Special. I am using a mid 90's Ruger Vaquero as a guinea pig. I really think the 45 CS is ok. Think I should stay with the Schofield. Any advice and wisdom on this subject would be appreciated! Thanks Guys!....Dave. &\?

So I just had to have a '49 right? got it in the mail about a week ago and realized it is the most expensive C&B out of five that I own!

Walker (kit gun) $325.00
'51 Navy Sheriff $300.00
'51 Navy brasser (1969 model) $60.00
'62 Army Police (on sale) $200.00
'49 pocket $350.00 :D :o :'( ???
I guess if I run out of ammo for the Walker, I will just shove the Pocket down one of the cylinders and send it downrange L@.

Ask The Experts / #11 Replacement Nipples
« on: October 10, 2014, 08:24:28 PM »
I, like many people, have a serious problem of finding #10 Rem. percussion caps. Sure I could just order a million and pay the haz-mat fee, but I like the fact that I can just buy a couple hundred at the local shooting supply? My local stores only carry CCI and my 300+ #10's don't fit sh-t! What do the experts think about converting my pistols to stainless #11 nipples from TOW? I already did this with my Walker, how about my '51 and '61 Navy's? What's the deal? Thanks- Dave.

I love Blackpowder and would in all Honesty have a Cap and Ball pistol as a sidearm. As for the MBR? Let's hear it! And for all intent and purpose your T/C Hawken, and Mississippi rifle ain't makin the cut! Go ahead Gents 'Cause I know as serious gunners and 2ND Amendment aficionados, you have a plan A and possibly a plan B.

Ask The Experts / Original Walker
« on: March 18, 2014, 09:42:08 AM »
Hello Guys, I just recently finished my Walker kit gun and am very pleased with the results. I built it more on speculation than on facts, so I hope you can help me out. I wanted it to look like an original and slightly used. I had read somewhere that the originals had wrought iron cylinders that were shipped in the white from the factory. Until recently, all the examples I have seen have pretty much been completely in the white or patina (whole gun).  After I completed my project I found a picture of an original Walker on an auction site, the best I've seen yet. I need to go get the picture or find a link somehow. Of course the auction is closed, as the gun sold 12-1-2012 for $95,000! It is Walker serial # 26 issued to "C" company U.S.M.R. Sam Walkers own Company! The gun still has bluing on the barrel and frame and the cylinder is gray/patina )k*. What was the reasoning for not bluing the cylinders? Wrought iron won't blue? I will try and get you guys a picture of said Walker. If it is for real, then I somehow inadvertently recreated #26 through sheer stupidity! I picked out one that mine closely resembled on Google Images, clicked on it , and BAM! There it was! One thing I did notice on original Walkers was the clearance for projectiles on the right side of the frame was more rounded and more elongated than on Italian repros. Started to try and do this but found out......The Italians out playing around with no soft steel. Thanks fellas for listening to my Rave. Hope I am right about wrought iron cylinders!

Gunsmithing/Parts & Repairs/Refinishing / ANTIQUING METAL TECHNIQUES
« on: February 27, 2014, 03:07:49 PM »
Does anybody have any suggestions and maybe photographs of techniques to antique metal? I've got my Walker project underway, and just haven't found too much info on antiquing firearms. I've heard bleach, Ospho metal treatment, sulfur of liver among a few. Also on a side note, the muzzle crown, or lack thereof, on my barrel looks like it was cut off with a pipe cutter! Completely flat and razor sharp! I would imagine original walkers were heavily beveled round like most real 19th century firearms? Any input would help!

Gun Builds and Projects / WALKER KIT GUN BUILD
« on: February 25, 2014, 05:12:11 PM »
Well got the Walker kit gun from Dixie Gun Works yesterday! Just to answer some questions everybody had, the proof marks are there, the gun is fully assembled and operational, the loading rod, trigger, and hammer are already case hardened, and the "U.S 1847" marking is present. The Taylor's website says the cylinder is already blued, the picture shows such, but the other parts are not case hardened. Dixie on the otherhand has the cylinder in white. I guess it's up to you. Started working on the oversize grip this afternoon and got so carried away I almost completely finished sanding it to the correct shape in about an hour! This build is absolutely EASY fellas even with limited skills and tools, so don't be scared! I'm probably not going to blue this gun, I want an antique finish, so any suggestions as how to do this is more than welcome! The frame and barrel need to be polished out so any info on doing this will also be welcome! We will experiment together on this project, making mine the guinea pig! 8) (7& ;)

Griswold & Gunnison / JEDEDIAH STAR G&G'S
« on: February 20, 2014, 03:09:01 PM »
Just browsing the pistols over on the Jedediah Star website and came across what they call a 1851 Navy Confederate revolver. What is aggravating about some of these websites is their picture quality sux, and sometimes what they are selling ain't what is pictured J*j Not so clearly I see this "Confederate" Navy appears to have a round barrel, brass frame and no engraving on the cylinder, in .36 Cal. Is this a NIB mislabeled G&G by Pietta? I am just astounded by Pietta's logistics. They make so many different versions of cap and ball pistols, yet only certain models are carried by...well..only certain importers/distributors! :D I guess for the most part these distributors cater to the guy who wants a"capun bawl" pistol and really does not care if it's in a blister pack on the shelf at Bass Pro, or any kinda historical significance, etc! Guess what? That guy is gonna buy 1, never clean it, ruin it, and try to sell it on Gunbroker for twice what he paid for it! We as collectors will buy many, and from the same place if we are treated right!!!!!Can I start beating the sh--! out of the horse right now? *Z$ *Z$ *Z$ I'm calm now. Distributors, please show what you are REALLY selling and spend some of that MUNNY on some good photos....please.

General Discussion / YOU LET IT GET AWAY
« on: February 17, 2014, 02:23:52 PM »
This is a thread about guns you traded, lost, were stolen, etc. and wish you could get back and or replace. Stories are welcome, but pictures would be nice too. This is so we can ooh and aah, and perhaps tell you what kinda dummy you are!.....JK! Here is my Bonehead story, that borderlines on stupidity and ends in heartbreak! About 18 years ago I came across a new production Colt SAA, nickel-plated, 4 3/4" barrel .45 Colt in a gun store in Birmingham. I had never seen a REAL Colt before this one. The store owner would not even take it out from under the glass and let me see it without $1300.00 cash in hand! I saved my pennies and got it! I took it home, cocked it a thousand times (oh yeah!).  Shot about 100 rds through it. Traded it 2 years later for a Ruger #1 rifle :(. A couple years after that I traded, the rifle for a 400 small block Chevy to go in my monster truck. Got divorced, ex Father-In_Law put motor in junk SUV and and sent it to the crusher by accident (jh....life is full of bad decisions I guess.

Walkers & Dragoons / ELK GRIPS FOR WALKER
« on: February 12, 2014, 07:33:49 PM »
Can't find anyone who makes elk or sambar stag grips for Walkers. May commission somebody to make a pair. What yall think? Don't care if they are 2-piece with a grip screw either! Have seen the Elk grips on here on a Dragoon so I think it's possible!
