Hawg,

The lady I was in contact with at Navy Arms told me that was the normal(?) thing that happens since the owner had died. The feds requested or required they turn in all of their records.  I took that as a ‘surrender’ your records.   :icon_scratch:

I have that exact same revolver.  Mine is a 1959-60 manufacture,  sold by Navy Arms.  My revolver was a gift from a friend.  He lost almost his entire gun collection due to a house fire.  That particular revolver was dug out of the ashes of the total loss of the house.  The revolver had been in an old handmade leather holster and was soaked from the water the fire department sprayed to put out the fire.  This was in the mid to late 70’s.

The charred holster was cracked off and removed.  The finish on the grips had evaporated basically,  but the wood was fine.  The blueing on the metal was blotchy and burned away to bright metal in many places.  The grain of the leather was burned into one side of the cylinder.

My friend contacted Navy Arms and told them what happened.  He ended up sending two revolvers back to Navy Arms.  One was the 1851 Navy,  and the other was a Walker.  Navy Arms thoroughly checked and completely reconditioned those revolvers.  The damaged bluing on the 1851 Navy was left alone.  This was all done free of charge and returned to my friend. Many years later he gave me both of those revolvers.

About ten years ago I got curious about the 1851 Navy.  I contacted Navy Arms and told them what I had and wanted to know the manufacturing date.  The owner of Navy Arms had recently died.  They had to surrender their sales records to the feds,  so they had no information regarding that revolver.

I received an email from Navy Arms several days later.  They had contacted a retired gunsmith who worked for Navy Arms.  He remembered working on that particular revolver.  He estimated the manufacturing date to be 1959-60.  I thanked the Navy Arms employee who helped me.  In return,  she sent me all the available spare parts they had left in stock for both the 1851 Navy and the Walker for free.  I was told Navy was moving away from the black powder revolver business.

My 1851 Navy is a great shooter.  I wouldn’t part with it.

All that water….  And they won’t build anymore reservoirs.  All our water just drains into the bay.  A friend lives near Atwater and has had to help another friend fill sandbags.  Look at the problems with the snow in Southern California,  the people cut off for ten days or more,  people freezing to death etc.  And all that is ok,  because the governor has been vacationing in Mexico.

Zulch,

When I do shoot,  I usually take along a .36 cal Navy,  .44 Army or a Walker..  I always take a .50 cal TC Hawken rifle and a TC Patriot pistol.  All percussion guns.  The newest would be the Patriot at about twenty-five years +-.  The rest are generally  forty plus years old.   :usa-flag-89:

My cartridge stuff has been set aside for the most part.  That’s for the Zombie Apocalypse.   :cowboypistol:

Dave,  those slot cars are absolutely great !  My father and uncle built and raced midgets before they got into the Indy cars.  I have an old photograph of my sister and mother standing next to one of the midgets.

Back on track about shooting and retirement…

I found that I had to go back to work,  just to rest.  There is so much to do.  The worst thing about retirement is that you have to drink coffee on your own time.   (7+"

As for shooting,  I shot an awful lot in my past life.  I’ve since put those types of guns aside and concentrated on the black powder stuff.  I thought I would shoot as much as I liked in retirement,  but found that most everyone else was still working.  So,  not much fun shooting alone.  My range time tapered off.

There was a time when I contracted with a custom rifle maker to build a pair of matching flintlocks.  One rifle was to be a present for my older brother.  After almost ten years of waiting and being stalled by the builder,  not to mention a lot of money…. I received the “rifles”.  The one I had built for my brother had a near catastrophic failure at the range after only less than 50 rounds through it.  My brother is an experienced shooter…

The “rifle” I had for myself was such a piece of garbage.  All efforts to correct things with the builder failed.  The barrel manufacturer would not stand behind the product used on the rifle.  That rifle was clearly unsafe to shoot.  I threw the entire thing away without even firing a shot.

I contacted a second well know custom builder and engaged him in building a pair of matching flintlock rifles.  Again,  one was to be a gift for my brother.  After eleven years of stalling,  his shoe was untied,  or his dog ate his homework,  he finally sent me a photo of a rifle stock.  The initial time for delivery was to be somewhere around two years,  for both builders.  The second builder used my money to finance several other builds for people who I think were his friends.  Emails and phone calls all for the most part met with negative results.  I even had a third party look into the build progress.  The builder said he was too busy at that time.  I told him to drop the second rifle and finish just one.  That would relieve some stress on him.

After much going around in circles with that individual,  he said he wanted to “redeem “ himself with me.  He would complete a rifle and send it within a few weeks.  Even though I paid a hefty amount to start the projects,  he told me I wouldn’t have to pay for the rifle because of the excessive amount of time.  He did refund my money even though I did not ask.  The rifle was never received.  He just quit.  No explanation,  nothing.

One of those rifles was planned for my retirement shooting.  I lost twenty years dealing with in my opinion dishonest individuals.  The whole experience soured me to the point that I came very close to throwing my sizable collection of all types,  into the bay.  :-X

I still shoot,  but not in the way I had dreamed about in retirement.

Rest In Peace Queen Elizabeth II.  The last of the leaders who came from that greatest generation.  Gracious,  kind and a wonderful sense of humor.

That is truly unfortunate.  Maybe you could bag or box up some of that and send to California.  I hope things work out for you without too much heartache.

We will just have to watch the recent first part of the series.  I’m sure it will be totally accurate….  Hopefully,  it will be as accurate as possible.  I think the second part of that series comes out this Fall.

I heard or read that the shotgun Billy used in his escape,  was loaded with dimes.
