Briefly tried dragging a finger on the cylinder. This one is hard to tell what's happening because I can't see the bolt at all. On other guns I have it was fairly easy to see the bolt popping up underneath the cylinder.

One thing I did notice when I took the cylinder off is I can see the bolt barely comes up above the water table(not sure water table is the right word?). Is it possible the bolt is just not coming up far enough to fully engage  the cylinder notches?

Must be the photo, I haven't opened the port or done anything except drop a shim down in the arbor hole.

My newest bp revolver.

It's new to me and I am 99% sure it was unfired when I got it.

I have a Colt Signature Series 1860 Army that is in need of help. If I cock it slow it seems to time and lock up just fine. If I cock it fast it fails to lock up and the cylinder overtravels. Can anyone tell me why is it doing that and how can I fix it? Any help would be appreciated.

PS. - I will post some pics of it later when I get the chance.

General Discussion / Re: Which pistol do you shoot the most?

My Uberti 1851 Navy .36 caliber which has a dovetail blade front sight I put on myself.  A close second would be my Pietta 1858 Remington .44 caliber Shooter's Model. These two guns are the ones that shoot closest to point of aim. That's why they get shot the most. I am thinking of putting a dovetail front sight on one of my Dragoon's as well.

That's cool you got Schuetzen for $15 especially when so many places are out. At one LGS I got two 1000ct boxes of large pistol primers a few days ago. They had four boxes and at first I was only going to take one but they said go ahead and get as many as you want. I took two and if the other two are still there in a week or so I might get them.

Another LGS, the one that carries real black powder has not run out. They have run out of some caps. A few weeks ago they had run out of everything except CCI #10. Then they got in a few Remington #11 but that's it, no CCI #11 and no Remington #10.

Gunsmithing/Parts & Repairs/Refinishing / Too many clicks

As I understand it a properly tuned cap n' ball revolver should have 3 clicks when you pull the hammer back. What does it mean when it has 4 clicks, or even 5 clicks?

I agree with ShotgunDave. There were some great deals in the beginning, it was clear they didn't know what they had. Now they have gone in the other direction and prices are too high. Black powder revolver collecting is funny. There is rare and neat stuff that people want but in most cases people still won't pay a real high price to obtain it.

Well I think it's fixed. I made a clearance cut on the base of the arbor so that now the hand can move freely whether the cylinder is in or not. I smoothed out the hand channel as well, since there was a bad ridge in there left from the machining process. Now the cylinder only binds if there is a cap stuck between the back of the cylinder and the frame.

It's possible that caps sticking between the cylinder and frame was the problem this time around. There definitely was a timing problem the first time I asked for help, which you guys(especially Dragoon45) helped me fix. When the cylinder started sticking again I think it might have just been cap jams and I misdiagnosed it.

I thank you guys for your comments and willingness to help.

Walkers & Dragoons / Re: Presentation case 1847 Walker

I agree the case looks fantastic. With regard to the trigger guard and backstrap, I believe all Colt 2nd Generation 1851 Navy's had brass trigger guards and brass backstraps. The vast majority of them were of the squareback style and were silver plated. There were small numbers of plain brass squareback, plain brass round trigger guards and silver plated brass round trigger guards.

There might be a copper plating underneath the silver, I know that nickel plating often uses a copper layer underneath so I guess it's possible silver plating might also use it. Also be aware that silver plating can tarnish to the point that it actually looks like blued steel.

Nice job on the case and great looking pistols.  It looks like the Walker has a taller front sight than what you normally see. I find that interesting.

Jim I don't recognise the mark but I think it could be a Belgian Centaure. The reason I say that is because Centaure is the only repro I know of that has a straight stepped cylinder like the original Colt 1860 Army. Most repros have a slightly diagonal angle where the cylinder steps up but on a Centaure it's a straight 90 degree angle.

Even if this gun is a Centaure I think $450 is too high. Centaure's are not common but the bad defarb job ruins most of the Centaure collectibility and value for me. At $200 it would be a good deal for parts if I was 100% sure it was a Centaure, which I am not.
