Mike,
I bet you are right about your guess of them being shisteres.  I never heard of them before.  I don’t think I would have missed a dealer

! Midwest Reloads!  Has percussion caps in stock. A great variety.

I’m going to continue making my own, because of the time I’ve put in it and the money I’ll save.

Percussion Caps and Primers / Review count
« on: March 19, 2024, 11:53:02 AM »
Since I began working on “perfecting a percussion cap tool and function”. I’ve kept a count. I have information posted here and on YouTube with a channel “Rick Foster”.  This began about three years ago when caps became scarse. They continue to be un available.  I’ve had 108631 reviews as of today. The count climbs each day.  I’m sure Thad’s a small percent of Blackpowder revolver and rifle users. And there are many other cap tinkers
I’m glad to have had a hand in supporting the sport.

We see the same barriers in the price of ammo and firearms.

Miguel,
Thanks for your comment. It means a lot. I hope all of this helps the gunmen shoot their C&B REVOLVERS.

Army Models / Re: Damage to 1860 sheriff

I took it apart and found the hand spring was to tight. It pushed the cylinder forward. Now the cylinder turns and fits the bolt .  The revolver shoots well.  I really like this shooter.

Thanks to Kaptainkirk I’ve been posting my efforts on percussion cap making since my first post March 3 2021 three years ago today.  I don’t have any more to add. The caps work after lots of work.  The powder works , may need more work , but does fire my revolvers and rifle. I cast my bullets and balls.  I’ll answer any questions. ,but no new information!

I went out to a friends farm last Monday (Feb 26, and tested my caps and powder ).  I shot a Pietta 1858 sheriff, and a Pietta 1860 Colt “Sheriff”   Mostly effective.  I have both on YouTube videos.  Look for “RickFoster”. And homemade percussion caps.

Mike, and others,
I use a cut off 1/4 inch screw driver or other steel rod such as a 1/4 inch drill bit. As to the aluminum disk mostly I use a 1/2 inch.hole punch, but in the last few weeks I’ve been using a 9/16 . The cap must be centered. I’m not so good at that.  A drill press  with power off with the “star board set firmly below makes the best setup.  As to the 1/4 in. Rod it’s better with the tip tapered a bit at the tip.

I’ve been using strike anywhere matches, when combined with the toy caps they ar very powerful. I’m sure the toy caps are corrosive.  The red ring caps are corrosive. The revolver nipples rust in a couple of days after firing those. I think the strike anywhere matches may be corrosive.  I doubt that the book matches are corrosive unless combined with the role caps, but not as powerful.  My most recent caps are with are with a role cap, head of a  strike anywhere match topped with a single role cap. These are very powerful.
You can find the role caps by a Google search of toy cap guns.

Here is another combination that may work well to prime percussion caps.
Two toy cap gun caps with the head of a book match between .  My limited testing seems to work.  The few I made with toy caps and the head of strike anywhere matches work very well.

Percussion Caps and Primers / Interest in caps
« on: February 25, 2024, 07:14:36 PM »
I’ve been working on the percussion cap scaresity problem now for three years.  I’m about to the end with a trip tomorrow to shoot a couple of black powder revolvers.  The interest remains highe as the caps are really scares. At this time I’ve had  100,000 plus  to read my material. This includes you tube  and Colt country forum.  I’m astounded at the interest.
Again thank to this forum for your patience and support.
