Knives, Swords, 'hawks, etc / Re: Long hunter knife

Thanks BC and Z. I made it years ago but it just had rough wood scales. I put the antler and pewter on it I guess about 8 or 9 years ago.

Hawg, The pewter is nice. Did you have to melt the pewter and make a mold or how/what did you do?

I wrapped brown paper around it and taped it down tight then poured the melted pewter in and filed it off smooth. It could use some more smoothing but if I haven't done it by now I probably won't. (7+"

Thanks Cap. I may never use it for anything but it will look good hanging on the wall with my rifle and tomahawk. Now I need to find a flint pistol I can afford.

Thanks Z. I just wanted something typical of what long hunters carried in the mid 18th century. To buy a knife and sheath that big is pretty expensive.

Not hunter knives for sure, but I just thought, why not add a couple. We had some nice items earlier, from Mazo Kid and Steam Burn et alt. but the pictures seem all to have disappeared.

I'll admit mine isn't "nice" but it's typical of what would have been carried in the 1760's.

Shooter. I like it! I guess when it was defarbed they maybe got a little over zealous and didn't care what they removed. Date stamp, etc. wish i had one of those lil' pistols. I really like that guard less trigger. Thanks for sharing.

That's what defarbing is Z. Removing all the Italian markings. I'm wondering why they didn't remove all of the ASM markings since they were so close. That is a neat looking little gun.

My interpretation of a long hunter knife. I made it out of an old gang saw blade and it has some pitting but I like the look of it and it's sharp enough to cut paper thin tomato slices. The blade is 11 inches long and 1 3/4 wide. The handle is elk antler and it's a handful but it feels good in the hand. The bolster is poured pewter. Mike116 made the sheath and it's a perfect fit.

Hawg, I did purchase some of Blackie's gun butter out of curiosity. It's very soft and after a couple of months it has started to separate and the oil is puddling. I make my own lube concoctions so I don't need anything commercially produced, but it did work on a pair of Uberti Remingtons for about 40 shots each. However, I used it on top of each chamber as well so the stuff was going everywhere so I suppose that really helped.
I now believe in this approach--cap & ball needs a soft but not runny lube but bullet lube grooves gets something stiffer.
G Dog, I know that "Hickok" 75 yard shot is not impossible. I have access to property owned by NSSA guys and I used to finish my shooting day with a cap & ball pistol by unloading my last six shots at a 2'X4' steel plate set at that distance. I could usually get 3 hits anyway.

Yeah but he puts it down the barrel.

I watched a few of his videos and they're pretty good. However I don't understand how lubing the barrel with any kind of lube is going to let a Remington run for 70 shots.

The Dupont caps are older than the UMC caps. I've got some Dupont tins from the late 60's early 70's. The Fiocchi tin is pre 72.

I've used those CCI caps before. I think that's the first tin design they used. Fiocchi bought Alcan in the early 70's.

Yes, they work.
Rem. 10's  = CCI 11's = RWS 1075'S

I use factory nipples. RWS 1075 are too big. Remington #10's fit good. CCI #10's are tight but they're all I use. CCI #11's are too big.

I imagine a lot of people are like me. I just bought one because the left doesn't want me to have one.

Coyotes are pretty timid down here. No badgers, porcupines or prairie dogs. I used a 30-06 for hogs. Nothing but a range toy for me. My opinion is mine, nothing more.
