I remember all the fuss about that pole.. it has been re-carved and is mounted on totem park in Klawock. The pole was in dire shape.. now the original pole sits next to the native carving shed in a pile of other poles that were brought over from the village site and then one of the master carver groups recharged them for prosperity... I will get a pic of the pole pile and post it here when I go to town on Friday..

Some before and after pictures of the original poles and the re-carved ones...

And a picture of the route I took paddling that day.
The green circle is where I actually am now in the village of Naukati Bay
The blue circle is where the village site is
The red circle is where I found the shaman site....

All the the mine symbols on the map are actually rock pits where rock was mined for making the endless dirt trails for logging. Most of them are gone. As are a majority of the dirt trails. Easiest way to explore is via canoe much of the time as the forest is dark and dense.

Forum Information / iPad and security questions???
« on: July 02, 2019, 07:25:59 AM »
Hi guys...

I use an iPad mini for about everything. Boat navigation, manual’s and technical documention, load data storage. You name it. Being a retired computer nerd helps.

That bing said, I can NOT figure out how to fix the verification questions after every post! My eyes are not as good as they once were dang it all, and I can not make out the stupid verification codes!!! It has been taking me 3 or 4 tries to post stuff due to that thing.

Mr. Kirk told me to bookmark the forum index page, then flush my cache, and it should go away. I do understand the terms, even though apple does things a bit different, I am a pc nerd and know how. I go to the main page, create a favorite in safari (bookmark), then close safari, and go to my settings and delete all my browser cache, but no joy. This silly verification screen will not let me post in peace.

Please take a guess on what letters you see in the verification window in the last picture.

Anybody else use an IPad on this site??? How did you get the thing to leave you alone?

Thanks so much,

AG

The village was moved to a place called Klawock, and trees (Sitka spruce)that were in the area harvested later for thier strength and weight in making Bi-planes for the British.

These pictures that follow were taken of the village site around the turn of the century, and I found them doing research last winter in university of Alaska photo archive.
The very last picture is the name of the guy I believe I found. Even back then durring the turn of the century, the influence of western culture had a huge effect, as witnessed by the sign. Large steam ships would sail in and the native folks would paddle out to trade if they could get the boat to stop with the lure of native culture, totem poles, and signs in English.. as they also did with the Russian boats and traders of the earlier times before the Americans bought Alaska. It was a huge social and economical event when a ship came through I imagine.

This is prolly something you guys don’t see every day. While canoeing/exploring one of the literally 100’s of small islands around our big island, I stumbled upon this native Shaman burial site... this burial site was facing a old village site called tuxecan that was destroyed approx 1901 Located across the bay about 3/4 of a mile. Shaman are always buried sitting up with an viewing port as it was thought that they would continue to watch over the village. I believe the sit to be around 200 years old. Red cedar totem poles can last over 300 years.

Ps.. hope I did the pictures right..

Greetings..

Name is Mark. I live pretty remote on an island in SE Alaska. Been an Alaskan for about 25 years. I make my BP, and cast. Been a general reloader for about 45 years now. Been doing BP for about the same amount of time and started with a 50 cal cannon that an old timer helped me make. I would have steered clear of that guy had I known the lifetime addiction he was passing to me..

I don’t do competitions, or rondy’s As there are no such things around here. I do BP as a functional tool, as smokeless is really hard to come by at times. Durring the last shortage, it was impossible to get as there are no roads from the mainland, and everything comes via boat or plane.

Mail comes via floatplane to our boat dock when the weather is good. Nearest real store is a full day journey there and back, and Ketchikan is a 2 day run for the most part, unless you own a float plane.

I live a subsistence lifestyle, no cellphone service, satellite internet and communications, and grow any fresh veggies, hunt bear, deer, for food, trap some, fish salmon, shrimp and halibut, and so on. Prince of Wales Island is big, about the size of Puerto Rico. Approx 800 miles of old logging roads, lots of old growth timber, and one main road that is partially paved that runs north and south on the island. Many folks around here are completely off grid with no power. There are no water wells, and folks catch rainwater and store it in large tanks for use.

Thanks to GrayFox for telling me about this place over on CastBoolits where I am known as Markopolo.

Have a blessed day!

AG.
