Schneider & Glassick / S&G on the cheap!
« on: September 20, 2011, 07:40:19 PM »
Just FYI, for you collector-types:
Been doing a bit of reading lately, both on Jim Davis' excellent site:

http://rprca.tripod.com/Home.html

and also the article that Fingers posted on the Schneider & Glassick:

http://blackpowdersmoke.com/revolvers/index.php?topic=207.0

(I think this was posted here as well, but couldn't find it)

Many times in the past I've seen "Colt Brasser" 1851 Models. Never paid 'em much attention; never had much interest in brassers.
But, after doing a bit of reading on the subject, I find that:
*Colt never made a brass-framed revolver
*Colt never made a .44 Navy
*All the Griswold & Gunnison models had round barrels
*The only known S&Gs (only three in existence) had plain unmarked cylinders in .36 cal.
So, what then, is a brass-framed 1851 replica, plain un-engraved cylinder in cal. .36, with an octagon barrel? You know, the cheap one on the auction sites touted as a "brass Colt 1851 Navy"?
It's an unintentional  Schneider & Glassick. Something that actually existed, but the replica maker didn't know, in almost certain terms. Why else would they sell them as a brass 1851 Navy, and label them as such?
Do I have your interest yet?
It certainly caught mine! Which is why I started looking, and found one. And Fingers is right; many times you'll find them listed as a brass 1851 Navy (by the uninitiated) and dirt-cheap at that.
NOW do I have your interest?
Just for comparison purposes:
*.44 cal, with rebated cylinder; NOT S&G
*.36 cal with Ormsby stage coach scene; NOT S&G
* Round barrel; NOT S&G

But if you find that brass framed, octagon barrel .36 cal Navy with a plain steel cylinder.....chances are it's not the run-of-the-mill gun they think it is, and would make an interesting addition to anyone's Reb gun collection.

Walkers & Dragoons / Captain's Dragoon

Purchased this Second model Dragoon (Uberti) in unfired condition earlier this year, and soon remedied the unfired part. Fit and finish impeccable. Shoots very well with 45gr Pyrodex P behind a .454 RB and Remington #10 caps. Everything they say about Uberti's is true! What a piece of craftsmanship!

Not really a Pocket, proper, but fits nicely IN my pocket!
Nice little Baby I purchased from Kevin (kwilfong) last spring. .31 cal, 5 shot. I have yet to fire it. I really like this thing! Kevin worked the trigger, added a new front sight and deepened the notch in the hammer.

Here are a few pix of my Navy Colts. The first is an EXCAM imported Navy, the maker of whom I haven't determined yet (probably ASM) as there are no maker marks visible. Very, very nice shooter with 20gr Pyrodex P and a .375 RB. Purchased new from a gun shop I worked at part time during the Eighties. The action was pretty poor until I worked over the trigger and hammer. Now; very nice!

Next up, my new Pietta brasser 5-1/2" Sheriff's Model in .44. I have not shot this yet, purchased new from Cabela's earlier last month.  Nice, light trigger, needs no work IMHO. Can't wait to shoot it!

Here is my ASP Colt 1860 Army, cal. .44, built from a white kit by Yours Truly back around '85 or so. I had the barrel and receiver professionally blued. This gun has by far the slickest action of any BP gun I own (thank you very much!) and shoots quite well using 30-35 gr Pyrodex P behind either a .454 RB or hand-cast Lee 200gr conicals.
