Conversions / Re: Conversion Cylinders
« on: December 21, 2023, 08:47:40 AM »
Zulch, FWIW I bought a couple of Howell cylinders a few years ago for a pair of Uberti 2nd model Dragoons. My experiences:
*Both guns actually shot very close to point of aim with blackpowder 45 Colts. Using percussion cylinders both guns usually shot about 4" low and 2" left.
*With the percussion cylinders timing was pretty good with bolt drop/full cock at almost same time. Howell cylinders both over travelled--hand was still pushing when bolt drop/full cock was achieved. Looking at the back of cylinders revealed ratchet cuts were quite different. It was enough that I found it irritating and didn't see how, in this case I could time the hand to work equally well for each cylinder.
* This is not to imply the Howell cylinders were anything but well made, but I ended up with the percussion cylinders back in the guns.

General Discussion / Re: Cap & Ball Challenge

Hawg, at one point in my life I would have seen this as easy. Now, all these years later I am doing this for fun. I also see the benefit in these activities as a way of staying focused, interested and motivated. The fun part is just icing on the cake.

General Discussion / Cap & Ball Challenge
« on: December 19, 2023, 08:19:57 AM »

Saw this on You Tube channel "Cap & Ball Fanatic" and it looks like fun. Most will have heard about Hickok and Hardin shooting playing cards but I had never considered doing it myself. Since most of my cap & ball shooting is for fun, this gives me a new angle to try. As a long time Cowboy Shooter, I have been promising myself to try the "Gunfighter" category and this would make good(and fun) training for both hands. Don't worry--I'm not going to be signing any playing cards!!

General Discussion / Re: Pistol shooting stance video

I've tried several different stances over the years. Probably just confused myself as just as I got comfortable with one I seemed to move on to another. That was in my bullseye training days. It wasn't until I started Cowboy Shooting and had to start acquiring multiple targets quickly that I had to rethink things a bit. My next bit of training is going to be point shooting so I'll have to figure that out.

Projectiles / Re: Kaido Ojamaa .31 Caliber Bullet Mold

Mention was made of Accurate Molds as the original maker. I have a flat nose heel bullet design By Accurate Molds in 36 & 44 and find they hit steel plates pretty good. Along with the extra weight they carry compared to a round ball, that flat face design seems to add punch.

Wow. From the photo the gun looks in new condition. Certainly a nice find. Hope you track down information on SS models. I've never seen one but do have a London Gray which I believe is simply polished steel. Pretty sure you are going to enjoy that Rogers & Spencer!

Navy Models / Re: Navy .36 energy

I can't comment about hunting, but I shoot my share of Navies. If steel knock down targets are any indication, there is a big difference using a 130 gr. flat point heel bullet compared to the round ball. Apples to oranges I suppose, but worth consideration. If I was going out to the woods with a Navy, that heel bullet with as much powder as I can fit in the chamber is what I would be taking.

Powder Horns & Flasks / Re: Horn Bugs

Sorry to hear of this. I've had a few similar unwanted surprises and always upsetting when it happens to gear you care about.

It might be wise to remove the cylinder and bolt to check if the bolt fits into the cylinder notches correctly. If it doesn't fit all the way into the notches, the bolt would have to be fitted to work right.
I had a brand new Uberti 60 Army with that issue. While the gun didn't throw by on cocking, at least while cocking slowly and deliberately, two of the notches were smaller than the rest and I'm glad I checked it as it probably would have exhibited that problem sooner or later.

Congrats on the new Army. I had a fluted cylinder Signature Series a few years back and was sorry to have let it go.

Percussion Caps and Primers / Re: WPA primers
« on: October 23, 2023, 09:04:31 AM »
I have used both standard and magnum primers in all my blackpowder calibers(too many calibers to list) for at least 30 years. When I first started loading blackpowder I was following Mike Venturino's advice in various media outlets. Initially there were claims that the magnum primers burned a little cleaner, but as I mostly shoot Cowboy matches and go through at least 100 rounds per, I can't really substantiate that claim. Either way, I've never seen any indication that magnum primers posed any issues with either a full or reduced load of blackpowder.

Percussion Caps and Primers / WPA primers
« on: October 22, 2023, 03:08:25 PM »
Attended a regional Cowboy Shoot on Saturday and a gentleman had a bunch of different primers for sale. WPA, which I assume are Wolf as they are made in Russia. There were about 20,000 large pistol magnums. The two guys in front of me bought 16,000 of them and my friend bought a 1,000 so I figured I better buy the last 3,000. I have used Wolf 209 shotgun primers with satisfaction in the past so I'm not expecting any problems. I did load up a few 44-40's with these primers and noticed they seated ever so slightly tighter than I'm used to. I later ran into the two guys that bought most of them and one joked " Had I brought more money you wouldn't have gotten those last few thousand". I couldn't pass these up as the seller was only asking $40 per thousand--seemed like the good old days. A few Cowboy matches left this year so I am curious to see how these primers work with my blackpowder loads.
