Title: What Black Powder Thing(s) Did You Do Today?
Post by: Captainkirk on October 25, 2021, 06:12:59 PM
OK, folks...not that we are judging you (cough*cough) but...
What Black Powder things did you do today?
Order something? Clean something? Shoot? Work on a BP project? I think it will be interesting to see what we all are doing every day, even if it's only fondling your favorite revolver. Join in, this should be a lot of fun!

Well Cap. I "FONDLED" my 1962 Gregorelli/Uberti (UG) 1851 today.  :lol-049:. It was my first purchase. Once a day occurrence. It’s a good fit in my hand and just simply put, a beautiful revolver. It has some small pock surface rust on it but it’s just added character to me. Typifies the old west in my humble opinion. Smells wonderful too. Action feels nice as well. Notice the cylinder date inscription. 1861-1961. Is this possibly a cylinder from an 1861? I had no idea when i bought it? Any thoughts out there?

Continued on with prepping 35 .45-70 BPCR cases for reloading; sizing, case mouth expansion, chamfering and de-burring case mouths. It's a never ending process! :001_smile:

Checked my range box to make sure it was restocked after the weekend . I try to keep it to where the only thing I have to worry about is which guns to take when packing up for the range ( ditto w my shotgun box).

We might be moving in the next week or so. So I got things a little more organized, to make it easier. I know, not very exciting. Once I get to the new house, black powder activities will commence post haste!

Not today but yesterday I finished up correcting the short arbor on my Richards Mason conversion.  I started out to fix it 4 years ago.

Opened the forum.
Sent the Missus a reminder text about finding the grease zerks she lost, (Amazon did their part...) so I can clean the barrel of my long gun.

No, I reckon that G&U was built for the Centennial celebration of the ACW (1961). That's when G&U sales were booming.

I love the G.U. guns. They are far better representations of the originals. The dimensions are near spot on. I have one from the very first year of production, 1959. Although some would say I ruined it, because I turned it into an accurate J. H. Dance.

I wouldn't say you ruined it. You made an accurate representation of a Dance...way better than Pietta's version.

Hi, I have had a new Pietta Paterson extra cylinder in the Pietta box sitting right next to my drone controllers for a few months. The weather is too bad to fly today so I decided to put that cylinder into working order. The cylinder was degreased using paint thinner, dried, and then air blown into the chambers to remove any remaining solvent in the nipples. The nipples were then removed, the threads coated with antisize, and then reinserted in the chambers. Eighteen grains of Black Mz were put into each chamber followed by a lubed wad. Each chamber was then compressed with an arbor press. Ballistic Products 0.380 balls were then seated in the chambers using the arbor press. The cylinder was then lightly coated with Ballistol and returned to my Paterson extra cylinder storage. There are now six loaded (no caps) Paterson cylinders ready to use.

Regards,
Richard

Arteest !!! Lol!

I preped (drilled/drilled and tapped the holes, removed the hand springs. Modified the bolt and trigger for coils.) 3 Walkers and 1 Dragoon. Pulled the arbors on the Dragoon and a Walker (they were loose).  Part of 6 total horse pistols that are leaving  this week/next Monday.

Okay Tim. Here ya go.

Both of my J. H. Dance replicas. The case is the one I got from Sourdough Jim. He got it from the Dr. Davis collection when he bought his Pietta Dance from there. He didn't like the blue lining, so he passed it on to me for a killer deal with all the accoutrements. My Dance fits perfect in it.

The standard barrel gun came about because I wanted an accurate representation of a Dance. The ones from Pietta are so wrong that I just didn't want one. So I had this 1959 G.U. Navy that was in bad shape. It had zero collector value (not that I care about that) so I decided to cut it up and do it right. Round barrel with blade front sight. Proper .36 caliber. No scene on cylinder. Blued frame. And of course, the recoil shields taken off. I did it all by hand and think it looks more accurate than the current factory edition.

Next up, I wanted a little bit more of a "custom" gun. I had read about and seen pictures in the Dance book, of a factory gun made with a 6" barrel. I believe they only made one. I really like the way the shorter barrel looked, so I went to town on another gun. This time I used a Pietta Navy and a G&G round barrel. That made life much easier than having to turn an octagon barrel round again. But I did have to shorten it and reinstall the lever catch by cutting a new dovetail and shortening the lever. I also installed a blade front sight. As usual the hardest part is removing the recoil shields. This 6" barrel gun has to be the perfect length. It handles better than any length barrel I have.

Both of these guns have full write-ups over in the Dance forum if you care to see how I made them, step by step.

So taking pictures of black powder things is what I did today.

I stopped by Cabela's today since I was nearby.  Found some caps so I got 2 of each.    It's been a while since I've seen them anywhere so I grabedd them up,  there was plenty on the shelf.

Finished up with my BPCR .45-70 brass and bagged it. Ready for loading. Now, if I can just get some more MPS 535gr Postell bullets. Otherwise I'm gonna have to break out the lead pot and mould and go to it.

I dug through my stash of antler and I'm working on a 90 grain powder measure. I also have some canvas duck in the wash. I'll cut it into strips later and lube them up. Progress so far but by no means done.

My order of extra pin gauges came in today. I use them as a mandrel to make paper cartridges. I wanted a few extras to keep in my "36" and "44" cartridge making boxes so I can grab everything in one box to make a specific load. I do Cowboy Matches on a regular basis and when I decide to use my percussion guns that day I find it much easier to use the paper cartridges. Then I spent about an hour just making the paper tubes themselves. I can quickly add powder later but I don't attach any projectile at that time as it allows me to use whatever the situation calls for--either round ball or heel bullet.

No luck.   Only one that wasn't junk.   It had a $14,000 dollar price tag.

Navy Six -  What sizes of pin gauges do you recommend for making.44 and .36 cig paper carts?  The mandrels that I’ve  been using are carved from wood with a slight taper. They work real well, but I’d like to try something perfectly cylindrical.  I use Piettas. Thanks for the help.

Get a Kibler Woodsrunner. If I can build one anybody can. About 1,300.00 delivered and it's historically correct.

I looked at them before I went to the gun shop yesterday.   Only thing holding me back is the time to build it.   I don't want or need more projects.
Your Kibler kit is what made me decide to look for a flintlock.   I've never had a flintlock rifle.

Mike, check out Clay Smith's website. He is a master gun builder who served an apprenticeship at the gun shop in Williamsburg, VA. He has a lot of high quality flintlocks on consignment from other makers besides his own builds. It's where I bought my last flintlock.

I finished the powder measure except for the leather thong. I still have to figure out what I'm going to attach it to and where I'm going to attach it. I thought about staining it but then remembered antler tips are always white. I'm still undecided on adding some color to the grooves. Yes mistakes were made. The most garish one is my original pilot hole I broke the drill bit off in it but the knot on the leather thong will hide it. This may not seem to be a big deal to many but it is for me.

Looks just right to me.   These are not supposed to be perfect.  Electric drills, belt Sanders, polishers weren't around yet.
I tied mine to the strap of my shooting bag.   Tuck it back inside when done.
