Title: Twister "kit"
Post by: mazo kid on July 07, 2020, 12:18:54 PM
I got the Twister kit today from jaxenro. It wasn't quite what I expected, but very much OK. The gun is completely assembled and just needs a bit of polishing and grips made. Oh, and one tiny detail....the gun will not go to full cock. I looked at it and it appears the mainspring is installed in the wrong position.

The left side. Joel included a couple of nicely grained walnut slabs for grips.

And the problem...

That looks like an interesting project! I like the wood very much.

Hope you can get it to function correctly.

Regards,

Jim

OK, mainspring is removed and the hammer goes into full cock. So nothing is jamming up the works internally.

And while I am sitting here, I made a quick template of the grip pattern. I haven't decided if I am going to use Joel's wood or something I have here.

Looking forward to seeing it finished. I picked up with some other stuff and tossed it in a box and never even really looked at it glad it was an easy fix

I figured it was a kit and just came assembled like the revolver kits. I was going to rust blue it

Yep, cool as hell. Ya scored on that one Em. Can't wait to see how you do it up.

Well, I'm not out of the woods yet. I re-installed the mainspring correctly and the hammer is locked up tight. After playing with it for a while (I'm getting very good at removing and installing that spring!) I really think the upper arm of the spring is too long, there isn't enough space to allow the arm of the spring to move freely when the rear of the hammer moves. The arc of the spring may also be the reason why the arm is too long. Tomorrow is another day....

Sounds like a Chinese jigsaw puzzle.

I am wondering if someone bought the kit got this far and then put it away

Mine wasn't a kit. It came fully assembled and came just like that with a blued barrel and polished frame. Mine worked tho. *6'

I played with the Twister a bit yesterday, no joy yet. I may be over my pay scale on this gun. But there is some improvement in hammer movement.

Have you tried throwing an "F" bomb at it yet? Sometimes that works for me.....may not fix the issue, but I always feel better.....:)

Mick is on to something here. I have used many, many "F" bombs in my endeavors. It always seems to help. Might be worth a try.

You're not holding your mouth right.

Correction: you are not holding your tongue in your mouth right.  ;)

Never heard that one before.

My brother used to do that when he was really concentrating, trying to do something hard!

When my wife is really concentrating upon whatever, her tongue tip finds it coming out of her mouth in different ways. I have tried to discern what each motion relates to, but after 34 years I am still at a standstill.  :)

I've seen people do it. Whenever I was having a hard time doing something my dad always said you're not holding your mouth right.

Well, I have 2 different things to try now. Maybe both at the same time?!

I continue to work a bit on the Twister almost every day. I am of the opinion that the gun was never made operational. As the hammer pivots back, the rear of the hammer moves to the back. I shortened up the spring I made, a little at a time. At a point it will slip off the spring "ledge".

View 2. I think you can visualize what I mean by the rear of the hammer moving back.

I am slowly altering the rear of the hammer.

I'll tell you what... that hammer is HARD! I had to get my Dremel out, doubled up on cut-off wheels to take off metal. Still have a ways to go.

I dunno, maybe I shouldn't have been so "public" with this project until I got it working.

If nothing else, I will have an unusual paper weight! Didn't work on it today, but do have some grips roughed out.

Mazo, if you want it you can have the one I've got. It's got some pitting but I think the frame will polish out ok. The barrels are pretty much toast and I noticed the other day one of the grips has a hairline crack but the action works as it should. I keep saying I'm going to polish it out and make a display out of it but I never will.

Thanks, I will accept the Twister. Then I can compare frames, etc. I can make grips, so no problem there.
