General Discussion / New Purchase

Here's something you don't see every day, an oriental matchlock!! I'm pretty sure it's a reproduction, but I can't find any info on it. The furniture is brass and the barrel is bronze....could be real, but made by an apprentice. No, I don't plan to fire it.....but you never know heheheh

Gunsmithing/Parts & Repairs/Refinishing / Bolt Fix
« on: March 01, 2018, 12:11:35 PM »
I just bought this  Uberti Pocket Police off GB at a great price because of someone's over-zealous gunsmithing attempt. They got a little carried away trimming down the bolt for whatever reason and the cylinder was over-rolling the engagement notches. Soooo, a simple fix was to stretch the bolt head a bit so that it would engage properly. Looking at the pic, you can see I ground in a line at the base of the bolt (on both sides). This allowed me to set a chisel in the groove and gently tap till I stretched the head sufficiently to capture the cylinder....just a simple fix for us simple minded kitchen table gun smiths LOL

Off-Topic Discussion / The Eclipse Part Deux
« on: August 16, 2017, 07:37:21 PM »
I posted on this before, obviously none of you live in  prime viewing area....so let me tell you more of what you're missing. Our police department has received calls asking if it was legal to sacrifice an animal in our public park for religious reasons (probably going to have a lawsuit filed against the city for denying religious freedoms) also, folks have declared they are going to have sexual congress (always liked that term, for screwing), publicly so that they can conceive, under the light of the eclipse, the new savior of the world. And you all think politics and all the other crap are what are screwing up America....JUST LOOK AT YOUR NEIGHBORS, (NOT MINE THANK GOD).

Cletus sees his hillbilly pal Bubba a-comin' down from the hills with a shotgun and a mason jar.
"What'cha doin' Bubba?"
"I came down to drink wit' ya, Cletus!"

Cletus says, "Oh, no, no, no! Your likker is potent awright, but I cain't stand the taste!"
Bubba points his shotgun at Cletus and says "DRINK!" and Cletus is forced to take a big swig.

"Woo-ha that's nasty!!" wails Cletus.

Then Bubba takes the likker jar and says, "OK, Cletus. You hold the shotgun on me and make me drink."

We are supposed to have a minimum of 30k sightseer's in the town (of 5k) and 1.5 million within a 4 hour radius. I've added the official site down below. Gas prices are already starting to go to gouging prices (up 9 cents over night), people are renting their yards to dry campers....but me and the missus are stocking up on toilet paper, soda, beer and bullets...that should hold us  &\?(obviously the necessities  too).

At The Range! / Antique Colt Range Report
« on: June 24, 2017, 12:40:02 PM »
I posted a pic of the 1873 Colt parts gun somewhere, but this is a followup cause I can't find the original post. I've taken it out to shoot twice now, 75-80 rounds so far and it continues to please in every sense. Aims high, but it's a natural pointer and easy to hit a 8X8 clanger at 25 yds once dialed in. Checked all the non matching serial #'s and the earliest is 1874, the newest is 1917. Quite a spread and a tribute to Colt consistency in manufacturing over the years. The latest thing I found out is that the cylinder was sleeved to accept 32-20, I'm guessing it was a 38 Colt part originally. Again, smokeless 4g of Unique under  115g rnfp slug.

General Discussion / Fathers Day
« on: June 19, 2017, 09:42:50 AM »
Started out with a quick trip to the local shooting hill (3 miles away and public ground), shot about 150 rnds through my new , old acquisitions , the 32-20 parts Colt a single shot remington bolt action rifle relined to shoot 17hm2 and my Uberti 44 Russian in 45 colt. Gotta fix the nickel sight on the Russian, can't see it when it's too bright, I'm thinking red nail polish, got any suggestions? Came home, watched John Wayne kick the shit out of some more guy's, poured a drink (or 2), and settled in till  dinner time. For dinner, a taste of my miss-spent youth, Caspers hot dog's, fresh corn on the cob and my wife's garlic fries. After, watched Al Pacino in the Movie "The Recruit" and continued to enjoy a few more sips of a fine adult beverage till my eye's got to heavy to keep open without taping the lids back. Very enjoyable day, hope all of your's was just as good!!

Army Models / Weekend Find
« on: June 12, 2017, 02:15:23 PM »
In a local internet site like craigslist that allows guns, in the parts department I found my dream gun...in parts. It's an 1873 Army in 32-20. The parts range from 1872 - 1907, it had a major well-brazed frame repair done years ago, that's only visible due to oxidation, it was the previous owners woods gun. Came with a set of dies, 100, shot once shells and a box of Nosler 100g hollow points. Don loaded with 4g of Unique which is the load I used for my old 73' Winchester I was forced to sell. I took it out back and put a few slugs down range, shoots great, obviously the timing and lockup are great. Guess I was wrong when I said my collecting days were over.

BPCR Reloading / Le Challenger Reloader review
« on: May 07, 2017, 09:25:33 PM »
Well, I got the thing on Thursday, spent some time refurbishing a TV tray for reloading (at least some of it), while watching the tube. In the pic you can see a brown hunk of steel coming up on the back side of the table, it's an antique 7 pound "C" clamp needed to balance the tray so it doesn't tip over. The legs have been firmed up and screwed in place for security. Now, about the re-loader, it works perfectly for de-capping, (all I've done so far), however, who ever came up with the method of directing the spent caps to the holding tube needs to be fired!!! They used the old style ram bar with the pre-cut cap deflector pointing to the right and made a small exit port on the left with a thin steel wire as the deflector to aim the spent primers towards the collection tube on the left side of the handle. It makes a really cute little "ting" sound as the primers bounce off the wire and fall on the floor on the right side. This will be corrected shortly with an insert to direct the primers in the right direction.

A son of my wife's friend sends me interesting emails every now and then. This time it was of a country fire department spending a break with a young, local, tame and female  elk. And it sparked a memory instead of a reply:

Larry,
Cool post. Back a (many) few years, when I was working at training horses, the ranch owner an his wife owned a herd of horses and a flock of sheep. One Winter day a baby bull elk showed up in the sheep pen !!! They fed him thru the Winter and he vanished in the Spring. Every Fall he showed up and spent the Winter with the flock (yes, while I was working there). Of course, male Elk have antlers, so each year Jud would saw them off so the bull didn't inadvertently gore a sheep. That time is long past, but an excellent memory, Thanx for making me use some, dormant brain cells to recall the experience.

I bought this one over a month ago and it's been held up by Fedx in the delivery bay for more than a week thanks to the snow. It was made on 2003, never been fired and damn near pristine. 31 cal, 3.5" bbl and about the same size as a 49' pocket. I thought they were bigger framed.
