Flintlock Muskets and Rifles / Re: A flintlock

What was your faux case coloring process?

Strategic application of a pencil torch.   Barely heating some areas until grayness darken.  Then more heat in small areas for straw  color and even more to get blue.   Making sure it's just the surface getting hot enough to change color.    I also fire blued the lock screws.

Right now I know nothing about this rifle.   I still need to polish the pan before I test it out.   I have everything I need....  4F,  3F, & 2F BP to experiment with.   Lubed patches and a couple sizes of round balls.    The agate flint installed now seems to spark quite well and have several more flints to try.   Hope to see how it shoots soon.   Time is all I need.

Flintlock Muskets and Rifles / A flintlock
« on: June 15, 2024, 09:28:07 PM »
I finally got around to getting a flintlock.   It's not a fancy, custom, hand built, period correct, rocklock but it should satisfy my desire to own one.   It's a Traditions Pennsylvania rifle in 50 cal.   I bought it online without seeing pictures or anything because it was "new in the box"  and I was dealing with someone I trust and had dealt with before.  I knew as soon as I opened the box that this was not a new rifle.   The barrel was unfinished,  flat gray,  oxidized metal.   They didn't even remove the barrel to strip the finish,  it still had bluing all over the underside.   The lock had been Case Colored at one time but someone attempted to strip the finish off the lock plate too.  Lots of other things to be fixed too so I guess you could say I bought a kit gun instead of a new rifle.
I would have paid a bit more and got a Kibler kit had known I would end up doing so much to this rifle.   At first I intended to put the rifle away for a while but I am too impatient for that so I spent a bunch of late nights getting it ready to shoot.   Pics below show how it started out and what it looks like now.
Barrel sanded down to 600 grit and browned with Laurel Mountain Browning and Degreaser.
I did a faux Case coloring on the Lock plate, frizzen, cock and sights after sanding and polishing.  Touched up the stock and refinished the ram rod which was red when I got it.

I plan to shoot it next week sometime, stay tuned.

Before....

And After....

I know the locks on the Traditions rifles are not held in high regard but the barrels are supposed to be good.   It's not perfect or even sort of period correct but if it shoots OK I'll be pleased with it.   I like the way it looks now.

Sorry you got bamboozled by this guy Navy Six.    I primarily use PayPal and always use "goods & services" category,  never pay a bill with "friends & family".    I've never  lost a dispute when paying with PayPal (won both disputes) and I have never had anyone dispute or request a refund from me.
Deals like this not only reflect badly on the seller but also cast others with the same business model in a bad light.

What is a cicada?    Here we have a yearly Miler moth Invasion.   They migrate from the plains to the mountains every spring.   Not too bad this year but some years everything is covered with moths.

Yesterday I opened an ammo box I haven't opened in 6 years and found five more tins of CCI #10's. <={

Nice surprise!       I cleaned up some of the shop a couple weeks ago and found a zip lock bag full of caps.   Don't what size but they are all the same.   Must be 500 or so.   I must have gotten them in a gun deal or trade and forgot about them.   I know I did not put them in a zip lock bag.

#10 caps from Cabelas finally showed up.  Promised in 4 days but took 9 days to get them. I was beginning to think I got dupped and they were going to put me on Back Order.   Thankfully they came through.   I used to like Cabelas but I don't trust them anymore.

Nice pictures,  looks like a fun time.   What could more fun on a Sunday afternoon than box full of wieners.

I know you didn't just say that! (7+" (7+" (7+"

OK, since your mind wants to go that way I could change it to "hot dogs"   lol

Cabela's has Remington #10 Percussion caps in stock as of this posting for $12.99 /100.   I just ordered 500.   Total was $70+ change,  shipped to store for pick up in 4 days.    No hazmat if you can pick up in store.   Otherwise add $25 for hazmat charges.

Crazy Crow is a good place too.   I used to get catalogs from them but they may have quit.   Everything is online now.  I haven't bought anything there for years so they may have dropped me from the list.

Did you get that sheath from a girl named Cheyenne Tremblay?
She does some pretty good stuff at reasonable prices.

Mike,

They all look good.  Do you also make book covers? Or book covers that will hold a revolver?

Kevin

I have made some book covers.  Mostly for journals and things like that.   The hidden revolver thing might require some finesse but I think I could figure it out.
