So it is the black flies.

All we have to do is locate one of the old 1860's cap making machines at a garage sale or something, and haul it to the Colt Forum Clubhouse. When a member needs some caps he can go to the Clubhouse, fire up the steam boiler, and run off a batch. Members with long hair will need to wear hair nets, and smoking while the machine is in operation will have to be discouraged. (7&

On the other hand primers these days contain a variety of chemicals along with the styphnate, nobody seems to know what's in Black MZ, and almost anything can turn up in gun lube. If I was toting a replica cap and ball revolver for personal protection (which I wouldn't) I'd stick to blackpowder and ordinary Remington or CCI caps, and no lube. It worked for Robert E. Lee, so there's a reasonable chance it would work for me too.

Richard, black flies may have gotten into your gun safe and devoured the priming composition in the caps. Check under the cushions for shed wings, and don't nick the gall bladder in the process, it will taint the meat. (7+"

It would be simple enough to set up an experiment with an empty cylinder, switching propellants and lubes in various chambers. Something must be out-gassing by way of the nipples and killing the primers. Are temperatures stable where you store the loaded cylinders?

That's quite a variety Muttly, I don't think my local super market could beat you.

Must be something in the air.  I bought Italian sausages, mushrooms and peppers yesterday, figured to cook them up Thursday, I already have the onions on hand. Still pondering the bread, probably keep it simple and just go with hoagie rolls lined with provolone to hold the juice in. Pickles on the side is an excellent idea Muttly, must see whether I can score some half sours.

Do let's piss on the lurkers, I am quite curious about how much  they can absorb before they begin to drip.  :P

Something I don't understand is why it matters whether lurkers lurk or newbies are shy about posting. Does a forum get something from the number of its contributing members, does it  fail if the numbers  don't increase, or perhaps even decrease?

I'll be honest, I only hang out on blackpowder forums to meet hot chicks. If the chicks leave, I leave. I might be generating a sock-puppet here named either "CRYSTALXXX" or "SWEET JASMINE 4-U" in the near future to attract more babes to the board, don't get the wrong idea about me, I'm just taking a bullet for the good of the squad. Richard...
Something interesting I've noticed in the past is that the scoop (.30 cal carbine shell) I keep in a wide mouth plastic container with my home-made powder turns a deep blue/black over time. I thought it might be a result of acidic sulfur, so recently I switched to a non acidic sulfur, and still get the same result. As an experiment I just now put a scrap of roofing copper into the powder jar to see whether anything happens.

Yep, science is fun Richard.  I did some web surfing yesterday to learn more about  liver of sulfur and how it's used to antique silver, brass, and copper. I found a youtube video by a guy who dipped silver jewelry into a solution of liver of sulfur,  removed the pieces fairly quickly, and neutralized them in water. He got all sorts of color flashing from straw yellow to purple, put me in mind of color case hardening.

 Richard...
I have a jar of Pyrodex P that my son bought me, but I've never fired any of it. I'll light some off in a tuna can this 4th of July and see whether it drives the mosquitoes away.

I ultimately took the same approach Richard, and simply ordered both the ammonium sulfate and the oxalic acid, I'll get the TSP from the local hardware. Your copper plating appears to be proceeding well, it will be quite interesting to see how the patina develops over time. If you run out of patience you can always darken it with liver of sulfur.

There has to be an inexpensive chemical somewhere that can be mixed into black powder which will both soften fouling and repel insects,it's just a question of finding it! ;)
