Congratulations!  I'm sure you will have a great time at the range with those loads.  I cast and shoot the same Lyman Postel bullet in my 1874 .45-70 and also in my .45-110 Quigley Rifle with 100 grains of ffg.  That gun weighs 14.2 lbs., but it still really lets you know when you pull the trigger.  I've only shot it off the bench, but I'm hoping that sitting on a stool with the proper height cross sticks that the recoil will be more manageable.  You might try that with yours and see if it is more comfortable for you to shoot.  Best of luck, Gray Fox

Dave:  Did you make that 1860 rig?  If so, would PM me with a cost for a set just like it?  Have a great July 4th.  GF

I use a set of diamond needle files that I got at Harbor Freight.  Rather than the knife shape, I use the narrow flat edge of the flat tip flat file to give me a square bottom in the hammer notch.  I just stuff a cotton ball in the hammer slot with the hammer at full cock to catch any minute filing dust.  By putting latteral pressure on the file you can enlarge the notch to either side giving you a bit of windage adjustment.  When I'm satisfied I degrease the notch with brake cleaner on a tissue, then apply Birchwood Casey liquid blueing with a paper match cardboard.  I do that until I get the color I want, then kill the process with a bit of oil on a tissue or cleaning swab.  It doesn't take much time and can be done on the range.  GF

I'm not wanting to do a Kirst gated conversion, just a drop in.  GF

I'm backordered at Taylors and everywhere else that sells Pietta 1860 conversion cylinders.   Taylors licensed the production of the cylinders from Howell and I assumed they contract out to one or more machine shops to have them made.  Now, if that machine shop is in Italy, I could understand the problem.  Have any of you heard anything from the grapvine?  GF

Sorry guys, I got my cartridge history crossed up.  What I was talking about was S&W's response to the Army and the Czar's buyers wanting S&W's existing centerfire, heeled outside lubed .44 cartridge changed to a full diameter inside lubed cartridge.  Sorry for any confusion my clogged mind brought to the discussion.  GF

I thought S&W developed the .44 centerfire from its outside lubed heeled .44 cartridge because both the US Army and the Russsian Gov't. wanted it.  Did Colt develop another .44 centerfire cartridge?  Are we talking about the .44 Colt cartridge?  GF

I dont want to hijack this thread, but are the Pietta front sight pressed in also? I've got four I'd like to remove and replace and the drill chuck method sounds like it would work. GF

My recent purchase of an 1860 3" snub has 2021 stamped on the barrel and the box on the frame has a 21 in it.  Got it a month ago.  GF

One of these is listed locally.  It is NIB with the silver plated trigger guard and grip frame.  What would be the ballpark price on one?  Thanks, GF

I have two at his place that he says are almost finished.  I sent two unfired Piettas, a full size 1860 Army and one of the much discussed 3" 1860 Armys with the Thunderer grip.  I'm looking forward to getting them back and to the range.  If I can get to the right range I'm going to set up my chrony and try several loadings with loose Pyrodex P, loose KIK fffg and Pyrodex 30 grain pellets.  I'll try both round ball and my self cast 200 grain Lee conicals.  If I'm extremely lucky my backordered .45 Colt conversion cylinder will come from Taylors and I can see how both shoot with Pyrodex loaded .45 Schofield and .45 Colt with my self cast Lee 255 grain round nose flat point bullets.  If that happens it will be the better part of an afternoon just shooting those two guns and I have a bunch of others I need to shoot.  Unfortunately it is 180 miles round trip to the range and gas aint cheap these days in my old V8 Ford 4x4.  I'll report back on this.  GF

More years ago than I recall exactly I shot in a match with my .54 Lyman Great Plains Rifle.  With two consecutive shots I split the ball on an ax head breaking the two clay birds hanging along each side, then cut the card at about 30 feet.  I'm sure even then I couldn't have done it with a .36 rifle, much less a pistol.  GF
