Lonesome Dove 2
« on: June 23, 2015, 09:48:20 PM »
OK, just finished watching 'Lonesome Dove 2; The Return', the sequel, which was filmed 5 years later (but takes place in the storyline immediately after) starring Jon Voight as Woodrow Call and Barbara Hershey as Clara (replacing Tommy Lee Jones and Anjelica Huston).
A little disappointing, as sequels generally are...although they wove an interesting tapestry of a story, one wonders why sometimes they don't just leave it alone and let your mind fill in the blanks?
I pretty much decided, by movie's end, that Woodrow F. Call was somewhat of an asshole. Now, Gus...Gus could be a hard man too (re; Jake Spoon doin' the Hemp Stretch Boogie) but he was just so damn likeable! Especially when he does the bartender face-plant. How can you not like a man like that...LOL! Jon Voight had a much harder edge to his Woodrow than TL Jones. And his refusal to acknowledge Newt as his blood, whatever excuses he gave, throughout the whole movie (right up to the end) really gave me a strong dislike of the character. I would have ridden with Gus anywhere. Woodrow; we would have parted company...that's just the way I see it.
Anyway, if you haven't seen Part 2, it's on Comcast/Premium Channels/Westerns (along with LD1, a bunch of other westerns including every single 'Wanted; Dead or Alive' episode, 'Gunsmoke', as well as others). I only caught one or two of the 'Wanted' episodes in my youth; now I've watched every single one up to episode 175 and I'm still going! McQueen is one badass!

As movies go very few can hold my attention.  "Lonesome Dove" was one of them.   The sequel "Lonesome Dove 2" could not.  I tried to watch it several times but never got past the first few minutes.  The same goes for "The Streets of Laredo",   I tried but never made it more than 30 minutes into it.

I had to force myself through the first half hour, then it began to hold my attention. LD it's not. Jones and Duvall made that movie

My dad got real hooked on the TV series, but I never could watch much of it.

I think you hit the nail on the head.   Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall were the keys.   Without them something was lacking.
