Rare "Blank Cylinder" version and a question.
« on: April 21, 2016, 08:38:30 AM »
Can anyone tell me a good way to remove cosmoline without disassembling the revolver?

A couple months ago I won an auction for a NIB Colt 2nd Gen. 1851 Navy. It turned out to be a special edition "Blank Cylinder" version, of which only 300 were made so I don't want to shoot it. It appears totally new with no marks whatsoever, like the wedge has never been removed, the loading lever has never been moved and the cylinder has never been turned.

I set it on a towel to take pictures of it and now it looks like crap because there's lint all over it stuck to the cosmoline. I need to find a way to clean it without disassembling or moving any of the parts.

To stay on topic, here's a couple pics.

Balistol will remove the packing grease & protect the surfaces.

Spray electric motor cleaner or brake cleaner. Watch the stock finish.    Mark

Balistol will not hurt the wood like other cleaner could.

Interesting LonesomePigeon, what is the "special edition 'Blank Cylinder' version," I haven't read about that one. I think I see a cylinder scene or is that cosmoline?
My biggest concern is that when I pass away, my wife will sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them.

That's cosmoline and dust/lint. I thought is had a cylinder scene when I bid on it too. It's the same as regular 2nd Gen Navy's except there's no cylinder scene. Dennis Russell's book is where I heard of them.

I'm wondering if there were ever any original Colt's with no cylinder scene, besides the fluted ones of course.
