bag mold? + 69 cal musket ball question
« on: September 01, 2016, 06:10:39 AM »
1, what's a bag mold.. I've not heard that term before.

2, I'm looking for a mold for roundballs for my 69 cal musket.  Currently buying balls from Dixie, but that's breaking me.  Now that I am casting, I want to get a mold.

The Dixie balls are measuring .675

I wouldn't mind staying with that.

I see tow has a .680 primitive scissor mold with stem cutter.

Anyone got any other sources??

The .675 rams home nicely with my cotton patches, I'd like to keep that trend, and not get into harder loading pressures:)

Thanks

A bag mold is just a primitive mold with no sprue cutter. Midway has a .690 Lee mold. Didn't see a .680 listed anywhere. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/765933/lee-1-cavity-bullet-mold-690-diameter-round-ball
You might find a Lyman didn't look at those but they cost a lot more. If you want a Lyman look on ebay for a used one.

I'd love to get a 67.5, I thought tow had some before, but only a .680 now.

You don't want to buy anything from Lee Precision. They cost too much. You can almost always find what they have elsewhere for a lot less. Just sayin.

RCBS makes a .678 Round ball mould.   Buffalo Arms has them in stock,  here's a link....   http://www.buffaloarms.com/RCBS_Bullet_Moulds_it-162465.aspx?CAT=4461
You won't like the price though.

That's about the price.  Ok fox traders has a 675 I just found.. Same price :)

The thing I found odd was I had emailed tow about their .680 mold, and they said they didn't recommend it for hot lead?? Wtf??  What are they selling it for? Decoration?

Question, found an old Lyman single cavity .675 mold.  What handles will fit? Lyman only or? Thanks

It's not much trouble to put Lee handles on them for about half the money of Lyman handles.

Hmm, good to hear.  I can get the long throat lee handles for 13$, they say they fit Lyman single hole molds.  And i can get the mold fir 65$.

How do those molds pin on.  My other molds all came assembled.  Is there a  access to the pin on the bottom of the mold?

Ok, thanks.  With any luck, I might have the mold next week.  I have a set of lee handles, and I found a Lyman screw kit for single molds for a couple bucks.

Will know if I'm good in a week :)

Jeff Tanner over in the UK will cut you a brass mold any size you want. Easy to deal with, has a USA bank account so no money changing hassles. I have 3-4 of his molds. They don't have handles or sprue cutter. You will usually have the mold in hand in a week or so. A few minutes with a file will usually make most any handle work; I've done it for those molds.

I have several original bag molds, but don't use them much. They are not fun to cast with! Mine (most of them) do have a nipper-type sprue cutter on the inside of the handle. Also, those original bag molds are often not very round at all, makes you wonder about all the talk of how accurate those old rifles were. I suppose though, that the balls would load the same way each time so you make adjustment based on that.

Well, got my Lyman .675 mold today, used in great condition.  Set of lee big handles fit it perfect with screw kit.

79$, can't beat that!

Also got my .490 mold in.

Gonna be a good weekend!
