Why is the Colt design such a natural pointer?
« on: July 30, 2016, 11:43:10 AM »
Hi, I have my opinions, but why do you think that the Colt design is a natural pointer? I shoot all kinds and models of BP revolvers, but I'm always impressed on how the Colt design can allow a casual shooter to almost always hit in the "kill zone" with little effort. What are your thoughts on this?

Regards,
Richard

I believe the Colts are more natural to shoot with due to the open top design.    You are sighting right down the top of the barrel.   It's similar to pointing your finger,  what could be more natural than that?

I agree.  I shoot better at pistol ranges with colts than say remingtons.  I'd agree, being able to sight right over the cyl with no top strap in the WA does make them a natural pointer.

The Colt is natural to me due to the sight plane, grip shape, and near-perfect balance of the gun.

The navy is a natural pointer for me as well either with or without the Pietta tail. I think it's the size and curve of the grips. An 1860 points well for me but not as well as the 51. The 60 has longer grips and a different curve.

Hi, I think that Mike nailed it, the Colt open top is an extension of the hand. I think the open top Colts are also more accurate than other designs in that the Colt has a longer sight radius. Besides being extremely functional, the open tops are beautiful revolvers. Fernando Lamas once said, "It is better to look good than to feel good." I think that when you look good, you feel good. Colt's sure do.

Colt grips fit the hand really well, the line of sight is closer to the top of your hand, the rear hammer sight is closer to your eye and the sight radius is longer.

Soundguy,
The only way to assess that would be to enter in the BP pistol postal match , he, he!
I tried with my 1860, and no way it could match my Remi......but then maybe your 1860 can demonstrate it superiority somehow.  The "Pistal" Match is open to all, and you don't have to post in the other forum, just pm me your results and I will include you and will also post the result in this forum.

Now that I might have to do.

What are the gun limitations?  No long bbl models like the buffalo rems or w. Earp models I presume?  7.5-9" models only? ( walkers legal? )

The only REM style I seem to shoot better with than a colt style is my carbine, and that's skewed because it has different sights.  I have a REM buffalo gun long bbl pistol with better sights that will likely shoot good as well.  To test a fair play field, however, I have a long bbl colt earp ( made up) gun.  I havnt shot either yet.
