What's the finish?
« on: April 07, 2017, 09:28:12 AM »
Hi, what do you think is the finish on this revolver?:

http://www.cabelas.com/product/PIETTA-OLD-SILVER-CAL-BP-REVOLVER/2349777.uts?searchPath=%2Fbrowse.cmd%3FcategoryId%3D734095080%26CQ_search%3Dpietta

Is that simply polished steel, or nickel plated?

Regards,
Richard

I have wondered about that myself. It is listed as polished steel.  It is interesting tho. It could be that Pietta is copying the way muskets were finnished in the Civil War. They were finnished in what the armories at the time called "in the bright". The bbls on most all U S  muskets, (not British Enfields) was highly polished, to almost chrome looking. Other than that I don't know. I am tempted.

Hi Rebel, I wonder if the finish is some epoxy clearcoat?

Richard

Hi Hawg, that's quite a premium for a non blued revolver over the price of a blued one. A blued revolver and one cup of vinegar in a half hour will achieve the same result for less cost.

I think there is more to it than just bare steel.

Regards,
Richard

It’s bright, alright.  It has as sort of a blingish cast.  If ya dropped it though, you could just hike back and find it, even in the dark.

The blued ones haven't had the work put into it this one has to polish it out. The amount of polishing will deter rust better than one the bluing has been stripped off of. It's bare steel but it's your money.

If this is just plain polished steel it might be really good for sending out to be professionally blued/color case hardened. Most of those places the base price doesn't include polishing.
