anchor design on the butt of a Bisley
« on: February 18, 2023, 07:24:31 AM »
A friend of mine just bought a 38WCF Bisley made in 1895.
The thing looks real great.

After careful cleaning, he spotted a faint design on the butt:

It looks like an anchor, but it is certainly not the usual Navy design.
Has anyone seen anything like this before?

No I haven't. It's definitely not navy.

That's a fine example of a Bisley. I've never seen that stamp. It'll be interesting to find out what it is. Does he have a Colt letter on it's origins? That would show where it was sent from the factory.

Looks like it could be what is referred to as a 'fouled' anchor which is an image used by the British and Canadian Navy's.

Thanks for your answers, Gentlemen.
I'll ask about the letter from Colt, it could give us a hint.
