My 1860 Army gun build
« on: June 12, 2015, 12:35:48 PM »
Some of you may remember, a while back I purchased an Armi San Paolo (ASP) Colt Army from Tom-ADC on this very forum (thanks, Tom!  ;) ) While this gun was well-used and Tom never shot it, it does have some issues, but being as it's a twin to my other ASP Army, I couldn't resist.
I've been mulling over what to do with it for some time now....do a gated Kirst, a Howell drop-in, or just repair it to shooting order as a BP revolver?
With the pricing and difficulty in getting Cowboy ammo and components, I've decided (finally) to keep it BP, as is...with one twist. Rather than fix it myself, I've decided to send it on to our own Mike Brackett (.45 Dragoon) for a full 'Goonerizing' and fine tuning, and report back to you fine folks with the results. There will be before and after pix, (and hopefully some in-progress pix from Mike) and a shooting and eval after I get it back. Sorry, no pre-mod shooting eval as I don't really think it's in good enough condition to shoot as-is with the excess cylinder gap and loose barrel.
Pictures and details to follow....... L@.

My dear Captain Kirk.  Anyone who thinks, whether in a drunken stupor or not, that any Colt or clone whether Navy or Army needs to be fiddled with, goonerized or in any other way molested does not deserve to possess said weapon/s.  You are hereby notified of mandatory confiscation and are directed to immediately send any and all Colts, clones both Navy and Army to me.  End of discussion.

Well....it's a little rough by my standards.
But that's why we are going through it, you and I.
We're gonna see just how good we can make it, no?

Depending on how the insides are, I'm thinking it can end up perfect.

With arbor correction, a bolt block, action stop, .002" bbl/cyl clearance, a cap post, tuning the springs, perfect timing and few un-mentioned enhancements, . . . . . . . that's all it takes ! ! ! ! !

rd,
 All S.A.s need "fixing".

Gosh Captain!!!!!    ::)

Well, I hope it will meet your expectations! Right now, I feel like what I'm putting out is the best ever. Over the last year I've tweaked this and that and I think it has paid off. Of course, you will decide that!!

Thanks to all and I'll try to keep everyone up to speed on the steps. I typically spend about 10-12 hours with each gun so none are lacking individual attention.

Well, spoke with Mike on the phone today, he has received the gun and had the following comments to offer:
*He says it will make a great platform for a 'Gunslinger' gun
*The notches in the cylinder are deep with plenty of material around them
*The arbor is plenty long
*Hammer has replaceable-type cam (this is good)
*Bolt legs have plenty of meat on them to allow for fine-tuning
In short, what we have is a good candidate for the sort of surgery we're doing.

(Did I get all that right, Mike?)

Basically, this is what I'm getting:

I'm excited....how about you guys? (7&

I have been looking at Mike's work for some time now.  Nothing but good things reported about him and his work.   I still don't know which gun I am going to send him but I intend to have at least one of my Colt repros worked over by him in the near future.   What is his timeline right now?  How long before your 1860 is back in your hands?

Mike, he seemed to indicate it would only be a week or so, even though I told him from the get-go to take his sweet time.
I would suggest you give him a call or PM him to find out for sure.
Like you, I've only heard nothing but good about him. Spoke with him on the phone yesterday, very knowledgeable and friendly, total class-act.

Well, don't hold me quite to a week.
I've got some good ideas with this one since we're making this one a "gunslingers" tool!!

I'll be doing some "special" things for testing . . . .  :-X
