Lever shotgun
« on: March 22, 2016, 06:05:48 PM »
This is a fairly unusual shotgun; I know Hawg and one or two others have this too. A Winchester 1887 lever action, designed by Browning, even though he didn't really want to do it.

This is in 12 gauge; there was a later 1901 model that was 10 gauge.

The 1901 had a two piece lever. I grew up hunting with my 87 using 2 3/4 smokeless loads and once accidentally fired a 3 inch magnum out of it. I thought it had blown up but the only catastrophic damage was to the shell.

One the few shotguns I've ever had the desire to own.

I think the barrel on mine is longer than Mazo's. I can't find a full length pic of it, guess I need to dig it out and take some more. I'm thinking mine is 32 inches but might just be 30

You won't see this on a repop.

150 grains of black with a 900 grain bullet would put a thumpin on ya.  (7+" I've shot 480 grain .69 round balls out of my Pedersoli SXS with 100 grains and it will let you know it's there but it's a lot lighter than the 87.

I made the mistake of loading up a half-dozen smokeless .45/70s that were full-power loads for my High Wall....screaming out of the muzzle at over 1800 fps. Even with a light 405gr bullet those loads rattled my teeth and made me realize the standard factory velocity of 1330 was a much better choice. It took two weeks for the bruise to go away.

The hardest I've ever been kicked was with a Siamese Mauser chambered in 45-70. I don't know what the load was but a .458 Winchester magnum has nothing on it.
