Making a purchase choice.
« on: April 28, 2016, 04:18:16 PM »
I'm about ready to buy another BP revolver. I thought the model was set in my mind , but now
have shifted gears so to speak. Was plannig on a Uberti 1862 Police, but the price Im
seeing beyond $350 that is stretching the $ poke more that I want to spend.
I'm down to a .36 Navy . Cabelas has the Pietta "Yank" 7 1/2 "at $249.
Then I look at Dixie with a Pietta so called  Sheriff 5 1/2" at $275.
Then there are the 1861 Navy ,Colts later design .........see where I'm going ?   "+= Well at least I want a .36 cal.
Has Cabelas offered the 1851 on sale before ?
Are Pietta 1851 .36 same frame size as the .44 ?
And last are the Pietta Sheriff 5 1/2 '"just a cut down Army frame ?

Cabellas seems to run a rolling sale week to week.  1851 brass 44's currently 150$, etc, a few other on sale too.

The steel 51's at Cabella's don't go on sale very often. The sheriff model I saw on DGW was a short barreled 61. The army and navy frames are the same but the water table on the army is stepped and the cylinder is rebated. The army has a longer grip frame than the navy and Pietta puts the army grip on their .44 caliber 51's

The Army grip on the 51, so the Navy .36 would be a little smaller as in shorter ? Well I guess you did say that. :-[

Yes, the .36 navy grip is shorter. The 1873 Colt uses the same grip frame as the 51 navy, of course Pietta has to put their spin on it but they are getting better.

I'm about ready to buy another BP revolver.

Me, too.

I'm down to a .36 Navy . Cabelas has the Pietta "Yank" 7 1/2 "at $249.

I assume this is what you are looking at:

http://www.cabelas.com/product/shooting/firearms/black-powder-firearms/black-powder-revolvers%7C/pc/104792580/c/553829580/sc/571854780/i/567338580/pietta-model-1851-navy-yank-36-caliber-black-powder-revolver/705021.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fblack-powder-revolvers%2F_%2FN-1115735%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_567338580

I want one of those, also, but not ready to pay that price. DGW always seems to be higher priced with modern replicas, but they are great source for old muzzleloader parts.

I have a Pietta 1851 Navy .36 [CM] 2014 octagonal barrel which came with a round TG (on sale after Christmas 2014 for $199 and $5 shipping), but have since replaced the TG with a squareback TG from Taylors ($25) to create a 2nd Model replica with the classic Pietta "tail". I also have a Pietta G&G .36 [CN] 2015 ($220) that does not have the "tail" but is much thicker in the wrist than the "tail" revolvers.

I don't have a clue what the new "Yank" revolvers will look like as it seems Pietta is changing TG, BS, and wood lately. Notice the difference in the TG, BS, and wood between the two. Just using this as an illustration.

Then I look at Dixie with a Pietta so called  Sheriff 5 1/2" at $275.

Not interested in a short barrel Navy, and not at that price.

1861/1860 Colts are too round for my tastes. YMMV.

Has Cabelas offered the 1851 on sale before ?

Yes. Check the Cabela's website and they will show when their scheduled sales will happen. Normally around Thanksgiving and especially Christmas, if you can wait that long.

Quote
Are Pietta 1851 .36 same frame size as the .44 ?

No and yes. The .44 rebated cylinder requires a cut-to-fit water table, so not the same as the Pietta 1851 Navy .36. Pietta 1860 Army grip frame sets will fit a Pietta 1851 Navy, maybe with minor fitting. The frames are the same size (not like the Dragoons and the Walkers) and other folks have seemed to easily adapt them. I have no experience with that.

Quote
And last are the Pietta Sheriff 5 1/2 '" just a cut down Army frame?

Have no idea, sir. From what I have read (I do not own a Pietta 1860 Army), the Pietta 1851 Navy has the same frame as the Pietta 1860 Army.

I want one of those Pietta 1851 Navy steel pistols so I can create many variations with the two pistols I posted above. Just waiting for the price to hover at less than $200.

Anyone else on this forum, please feel free to correct me.

sourdough ,
I like most Navy offering and do like the shorter barreled models , just for
the lighter weight when shooting.
The Dixie is the one I was looking at but, like you, not for the price they want.
Where on the Cabelas web site is the sale schedule ?

Hi Hawg - I have not seen an example of that on Pietta's brass or steel frame Navy style .44's.

Cabelas has the Yank Navy on sale for 179.99.

http://www.cabelas.com/product/pietta-model-1851-navy-yank-36-caliber-black-powder-revolver/705021.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dpietta%26x%3D10%26y%3D6%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%252BProducts&Ntt=pietta

I was going to pass but the wife said I deserve it so ordered one.  I have the Sheriff's model 36 with the fluted cylinder.  I bought a replacement cylinder so it looks like a 61 navy with a short barrel.  Also have a Uberti London Navy which is the one I shoot mostly.

Actually what I called the Sheriff model Pietta calls the "1862 Army Police", but it is a short barreled 61 Navy.

The steel frame .36 Navy is the one to get.  Skip the Italian fantasy guns and get a replica of the real thing – one that really happened.   That is a really good price from Cabella’s.

Hi Hawg - I have not seen an example of that on Pietta's brass or steel frame Navy style .44's.

I haven't seen it personally because I don't fool with either but I have seen pics and it was discussed a few years ago back on another forum.

I think you have to be logged into the Cabela's site to see it.

At any rate, click on the link below and scroll down to the bottom right corner of the page under "Cabela's 2016 Sales" for links as follows:

Father's Day Sale

Black Friday Sale

Thanksgiving Day Sale

Christmas Sale

Cyber Monday Sale

If you click on the links, it will tell you that you missed the sale. They have always updated the links in years past when the sales are looming/coming close.

Dang, Gary, why did you have to post that? I have no funds at this time for toys and that is a better price than the same pistol I bought in 2014 by $20! Drooling...

Can you float me a no-interest loan? )  *6'  J/K

Thanks for the info, sir! I think there is at least one other person looking for this.

And, as concerns my immediate previous post, Cabela's has surprise sales such as this.
