How often do you completely take it down
« on: May 26, 2016, 05:28:32 PM »
I know it is perhaps a stupid question .. But just wondering if there is a standard practice... Each trip to the range I average 4 cylinders through each...do you have a certain # of rounds before you completely clean an 1851..?(besides barrel ,cylinder, outside frame group .)

I only disassemble my revolvers once or twice a year.   When I reassemble they get the internals packed with lube.   In the mean time several hundred rounds could get fired through some of them.   Others may only get couple cylinders worth.   I never have any problems with rust even though I use black powder almost exclusively.
Others will tell you they disassemble every time they shoot.    I don't find it necessary but I applaud their discipline.   I live in a very dry climate and believe that rust and corrosion may creep up more easily in more humid areas of the country (world).

I live in the humid south and I tear mine down once a year or so. I don't always clean the same day as shooting either. No rust, no corrosion, no problems not even with Pyrodex.

I clean after shooting and always take the revolver completely apart  to make sure that no cap fragments are loose inside the action.

Hi, I disassemble and clean all my C&B revolvers after shooting with BP or sub. Using conversion cylinders with smokeless powder, no disassembly is required, just a bore cleaning with solvent is done.

To simplify BP cleaning of the cylinders, I now don't remove the nipples. However, a good antisieze is on the nipple threads. When shooting with a dozen extra cylinders, this saves a lot of time compared to removal of every nipple.

Regards,
Richard

Depends.

If I'm shooting in a major match, I clean them completely just before.

If I'm shooting local monthly matches, they get torn down completely every month or two.

Hey Suntiger,

I tear mine down about every other session.  Since I don't get to shoot as much as many of the others I find the time spent doing the extra cleaning somewhat therapeutic.  As many have said, they can go a while without total tear down.
