Accuracy... 1851 vs modern
« on: May 29, 2016, 11:38:12 AM »
Anyone else find the Navy to be naturally better? I have a variety of cartridge Colts... But if I had to count on one shot... I'd take my navy ... Clearly not a great every day carry gun though

Hi Sun, my .36 1851s are my most accurate BP shooters.

I have cartridge guns that shoot better but the navies are the best of the C&B.

The .36 Navies, properly loaded, are tack drivers from my experience. Much more so than my .44's, with my target Remmy and Rogers & Spencer being the exception.

I went to the range a couple of weeks ago for a Colt fest .. Took my 1851s , my 1895 new army , woodsman and combat commander..and I understand why Wild Bill hung on to his Navies..was ok w all 4 .. Best w the 1851s.... The woodsman was right there though

I'll be the odd man out in this thread.  I have several favorite C&B revolvers but they do not outshoot any of my cartridge revolvers.  They equal a few but don't out perform them.

I have several revolvers chambered for the 45 ACP cartridge.  5 are S&W's and one is a clone of the Colt SAA Artillery Model.  I prefer them to the 1911 but probably because I am new to the 1911 pistol and not very familiar with it.  The S&W's on the other hand, I have been using them since the mid 60s so have a lot of experience with them and they are second nature to me.

The 1911 is an aquired taste.... I think I like it because it is also single action .. But my every day carry is a ruger lcp

My RIA 1911 in .45 ACP will shoot rings around my 51 navy. It will even do it with Russian steel cased ammo.

Hi Hawg, the poorer accuracy of your 1851 because you use that evil PRYODEX in the 51!!  (7+" (7+" (7+"
