Considering the technology at the time, historical goings on at the time, and and and,.  Seems the 1851 Navy takes it.

If Colt would have made the 1851 in .44 cal. with a 5 inch barrel? Now that would have been the best of the C&B revolvers! IMO. It certainly could have been done by 1860.

Why would they when they already had a belt size .44 with the 1860?

A .40 may have been interesting.  Colt made some prototypes (or at least one) in that caliber on the Navy frame.

By the time the Army came out, the '51 Navy design was considered "obsolete", hence the later Navy with creeping loading lever, rounded/streamlined barrel, etc.

Yes, but I live in 1862, and I want options. I have an 1851 model and I like the natural pointability, the grip frame, and the aesthetically more pleasing looks of the '51, but I also want more power and a shorter barrel. I am the customer, and the customer is never wrong!

If you lived in 1862 you took what you could get. If you wanted a shorter barrel you took a hacksaw to something you gave two weeks wages for.
