Do you think it may have a protective coat of something....varnish, etc?

Starting to think it does. Would think it would burn off around the front of the frame but it all looks the same.

Update.... Got the oil of wintergreen a couple of days ago but haven't gone down to clean the Kroil off the arbor. If the wintergreen oil won't loosen the cylinder up I will probably pull it and the arbor out of the gun, so it can sit in a bath of the oil for as long as it takes. At the most, it will cost a trigger/bolt spring and a new arbor to get the gun running. I have extra cylinders, even a conversion cylinder or 2 for it.
