1861 ASM Navy with Colt Markings
« on: June 16, 2017, 07:18:28 AM »
Fellas,

Wanted to share a few photos of this recent acquisition.  It has a date code of "AI", 1982, which I think puts it at the end of production of the 2nd Generation guns?  I have been after a civilian version of the 1861 and was glad to see this one come along.  I would describe the overall condition as really good and seems to me like it's had very little use, looks like it might've been used a little bit way back when, cleaned up and then put away.  The nipples show very little in the way of evidence of firing, nor does the hammer, chamber mouths still really sharp, bore is great, wedge has hardly a scrape mark, etc.

I've read all the varying threads on the ASM's with Colt markings, haven't seen any 1861's with those markings.  I know some collect the ASM's with Colt markings, this is my first one of those, but I have several other ASM products, which I am really fond of.  Any additional info or insight would be appreciated.

Hi Whip, that's a nice looking revolver. What makes this 1861 different than a Civilian 1860? Is it .36 or .44 caliber? Oh, you did say Navy, .36.

Regards,
Richard

Is the ASM marking on the frame or under the barrel?

It is under the barrel.  Meant to include a pic of that, or at the very least include that location in my description.

Thanks.  I jumped on it and was surprised I didn't get outbid.  I haven't seen many ASM 61's reported with the Colt markings either.  I tore it down yesterday and there is very little in the way evidence of use.  Even the nipples came right out with very little effort.

The color case hardening has a kind of flat sheen to to it, rather than a polished glossier look.  Is that intentional or just the way it turned out?

I don't know about the color case hardening but I do like the CCH on Armi San Marco's from that time period. Especially when it fades a little, I think it looks very similar to worn real bone charcoal CCH.

I have a 2nd Gen 1861 Navy and that ASM of yours looks just like it!  Hmmm?  In a way, I guess they re  Brothers.

Great find! Congrats to you.
