Here's a pic of a Colt 2nd Gen 1851 Navy I found at a local shop.

That's a real beauty Lonesome. What are your plans for it?

Thats very nice. Did you adopt yet?

Only thing that separates me from one is that consarn square trigger guard that digs me on my ring finger. My '61' Uberti has the nice round trigger guard. Love it.

Hi Lonesome, that's a beauty of a revolver. Do intend on shooting it?

Thanks, I paid $425 and it's unfired. It came in a box but it's the wrong box. The box is for a Colt 2nd Gen 1860 Army Stainless Steel and it's missing the paperwork and pretty worn. I will probably sell the box. I bought the gun to shoot but I haven't shot it yet.

I have a thread in the gunsmithing forum which explains why I haven't shot it yet. The chambers don't line up correctly with the bore. I think it's probably shootable as is, given that they use soft lead balls, but I would like it to be perfect.

You can generally adjust timing by replacing the bolt and shifting where the straight side edge is on the bolt head. The Pettifogger "Open Range" articles cover this in great detail with lots of pictures.

Looks very nice indeed. I like the squared trigger guard, very unusual. Sort that timing issue out and it will no doubt be a fine shooter. A stainless steel Colt replica. If I could locate one of those I would buy it in heartbeat to go with my stainless Uberti 1858.

Very nice 2nd gen. Mine was used but I was able to sort it out.

That square guard ... being very small to begin with ... and wrapping my bad finger even with the mild recoil ... instilled in me the need of replacing it with a Uberti brass trigger guard and backstrap. I very much like the round TG and the brass instead of the silver makes me no never mind. Very comfy and I really like my second gen navy.

When I bought mine, it was represented to me as unfired as well but this was a GB stinger. Second one in the 10 or so years I have bought n traded there.

I like the squared trigger guard too. I think it looks good with an octagon barrel. The Colt Signature Series 1851 Navy squareback trigger guard is quite a bit bigger than the Colt 2nd Gen 1851 Navy squareback trigger guard.

Well I was not aware of that. The second gen guards are very small.

Guess I will have to keep an eye out for the signature series grip frame and grip.

Thanks for the heads up. Truth be told, I admire the look of that square guard as well, but For shooting comfort, my brass round grip is very comfy and handles like the Colt it is .

It looks even better with the part round barrel. Fantasy Pietta 1851 Navy .36 2nd Model Dragoon. No, Pietta does not sell one. It is my parts gun.

Sourdough, I never get tired of that pic. You can call it a fantasy gun but I think what happened is a Leech and Rigdon busted it's gripframe and the local gunsmith just happened to have an old 1851 Navy Squareback in his parts box.

Talking of fantasy guns here's mine courtesy of Signor Pietta. Navy Yank snub 3" .44. I believe that is a Colt Lighting grip which didn't exist until the 1870's ?
