New tool. Cap making die
« on: March 25, 2021, 06:51:32 PM »
I ordered this stuff back in December. I had actually forgot about it until a couple days ago. I got an email from them out of the blue saying they had shipped my order. It arrived today.

I didn't really order this stuff so I could make caps on a regular basis. It's more of an emergency backup kind of thing. But with the scarcity of caps right now, it's probably a good thing to have on hand.

I'll give it a try and see how hard or easy it is to make caps with it. I know there are quite a few guys that do it. I think there's enough priming compound there to last a really long time.

Me too. Will you use aluminum foil? Or the copper foil?

I think I'm going to try the copper sheet first Em.

I ordered mine in February and it came today. I plan to try pop cans first. If that doesn’t work well then I’ll try the copper sheets.

As I mentioned before, I have heard that aluminum pie pans and serving trays are a little heavier. I have no experience with them (yet).

Seems like a bunch of us were all on the same wavelength and got one of these contraptions. Hopefully with all of us experimenting we can come up with a good way to do it.

Do you use the primer making chemicals they sell? Or do you get the raw materials and make the priming compound yourself?

I tried punching out the caps today using pop cans. I first punched out 2 caps to see how they fit on the nipples. They easily fit on my #11 nipples. I haven’t charged the caps yet. I am in punching mode. I hope to be able to take them shooting this week.

Nice to know it works Lyle. I had a house full of teenage girls this weekend, so I didn't get around to trying mine. I'll get to it this week.

I loaded my first batch of caps today. I mixed the Prime-all as per the instructions. Very easy to do. The instructions said to fill the cap completely. Not easy to do. I made a mistake and used a container to wide at the bottom. I chased the prime-all all over the bottom of the glass. I recommend using a small base container to access the mixture easier. I then added one drop of acetone to each cap. The prime-all compressed to about 1/2 the volume of the cap. One batch of mixed prime-all loaded 13 caps.

No you have to try them out (without charging the gun) and see if they all go bang.
