Capt. Kirk's thread on the 1858 Conversion was very inspirational to me. I was about to sell my lone Remington because i never used it. I think I will keep it now and try and get into the smokeless bidness  with this here beauty. I have posted these before but thought they needed another rotation.

If you go smokeless, make sure your MV's stay below 850fps, Tim. I highly recommend loading BPCR for it. That's what it was designed for originally, and built for as a reproduction.

Thank you Cap. Smokeless is cleaner isn't it? Guess I'm being lazy and wanting one that won't require cleaning as often.  :icon_scratch:

Yes, it's cleaner. But you have to watch the pressure spikes of different smokeless powders really carefully. One of the other caveats is that the .45 Colt case is cavernous and when you are putting very light loads of smokeless in to keep pressures down, you run the risk of easily doing a double charge, which could be disastrous in a BP revolver. You can't double charge a BP load in a cartridge revolver. The .45 Colt case only holds about 35gr of 3F, maybe a little less with 2F. My smokeless .44 mag cases aren't even half full when I charge them with 9.5gr of Unique. Mike116 made a post on cleaning BP cases and shows it can be easily done to make them look new with the right equipment in this thread:

I agree. That one needs a thread all it's own.

I see your point Cap. Makes very good sense. I do have BP so that would mean one less thing to buy. Just have to clean that bugger moe freakwently. Okay, got it.
Thank you for the compliment on the 1858.

OK, Mods! Split these posts off into another thread. This cool pistol certainly deserves some attention.

Are you going to put a drop-in cylinder in it?

Marshal, Hi, yes, that is the plan. Any thoughts sir?
I don't know if this thread here will suffice as a unique thread for the Remington in question but I started this one awhile back. Let me know Dave if I need to start a new one instead.

You're good Tim. I just moved the whole thing to the Remington board, so it's easy to find.

Question. Will you antique the new cylinder to match the gun?

Inquiring minds want to know.

IIRC, he said Taylor's had one to match?
