Which one should I get?
« on: May 24, 2014, 11:55:47 PM »
I am in a bit of a bind here.  I have and opportunity to get either a 2nd or 3rd gen 1873.  They are both pristine and come in the original wood box with the cardboard sleeve.  There is only one difference...one of them has the cool looking down-turned hammer.  Which one should I get and why.?

If the one with the "down turned hammer is a Bisley model I would buy that one.  The Bisley just appealls to me.
If not then buy both if you can't make up your mind.
You can always keep the one you like best after you decide and then sell the other one really cheap to someone on the Forum.

Hi Dryball, if these are real Colt manufacture, the 2nd gen is much more valuable than the 3rd gen. Some of the early 3rd gen had the pressed in cylinder bushing. The removable bushing of the 2nd gen is much more desirable. If you ever intend on fitting a 45 ACP cylinder or new .45 Colt cylinder to the revolver in the future, the 3rd gen has low cost parts available.  I like Mike's idea, buy them both.

Regards,
Richard

The second gen went out of production in 1974. That's the one I would get unless its a Bisley. A Bisley may be more valuable but I shoot my guns and I can't stand a Bisley grip.

Both, if you have the finances, otherwise the 2nd Gen

I hate it when I can't make up my mind... :D  I was leaning toward the 2nd gen but just wasn't sure.  I love the idea of buying both but it just isn't possible.  Ya see, The two are available but the same guy also has a Whitney lever gun for sale and I really want the Whitney.  Plus, the better half said I can only get two guns...

If the ""turned down hammer" gun is the one with the more rounded grip, then definitely a Bisley. Which one is 2nd and which one 3rd generation? The Bisley model was supposedly the more accurate gun with the grip enhancing stability and better sights. Is the price the same on both guns? My choice would be the Bisley and the rifle. Are the calibers the same? All these things factor in.

Mazo, sadly I can't remember which gun was what...I was so enamored that I felt like a giddy school girl.  I am going out near the end of the week.  They are both 45's.  The lever is a 40-60.  I will be sure to give an updated report with pictures near the end of the week.

Ok, so I went to the shop and got the 2nd Gen.  In my excitement the one I thought had a Bisley hammer was a Ruger Bisley birdshead.  Dang, I got so excited that I switched gun parts in my mind.  I didn't get to see the Whitney yet cause the guy was too busy...that's going to be next week.  However, I did get an original Marlin '94 in 32-20.  It's in great shape with a good bore and lots of rifling left.  I hate to do it to y'all but no pics yet on the Marlin.  I wish there was a drum-roll emoticon...lol Here we go!
