Lonesome Dove
« on: June 12, 2015, 10:57:54 PM »
Yeah, I know, I know...this came out in the late '80s and I'm just watching it now.... (K|
What a great series! Love Gus and his big-ass ol' Colt horse pistol....and the Henry to back it up! And from what I could tell, ol' Cap'n Call himself was sportin' a Colt's Army. A great, epic story...right down to the ending line. If you haven't seen it yet, do yourself a favor. Don't wait as long as I did. Pretty much a must-see if you're a western fan, and a Colt lover especially....

If we haven't seen it yet, how can we not wait longer than you did to see it?

I can not comment on the movie as I have yet to view it.  It might be on the list but if so, it is a bit down the line.  Open Range is another one I would like to watch.

(jh   Wow never watched Lonesome Dove??? Duuude its a must watch....  Got my Walker Colt just because of Gus.... I remember when it ran as a miniseries on TV. Some buisnesses and offices closed early so folks could get home in time to watch it.

Trying to think what was the last Western I watched.  True Grit (JW)?  Shootist?  Got it, The Cheyenne Social Club!  I really like that one and it starred two of my favorite actors, Jimmy Stewart and Hank Fonda.  Great movie.

Larry McMurtry’s book Lonesome Dove got a Pulitzer.  Anyone who has not read it really should.  It’s in paperback and worth owning.  In the book Gus carries a Dragoon.  Deets has a Walker with a broken hammer spur.

The series is great too.  One of the rare cases where the book and the film supplement and enhance each other.  A must see and read.  Iconic.

One can see Open Range for free, full movie.

I don't see many movies so I rarely get into these discussions but I have watched Lonesome Dove enough times that my old VHS copy won't run anymore.   My daughter just gave me a DVD copy the other day.
G Dog is right about the book,  everyone should read the book and watch the movie.  They are complementary to each other.  I have one of the original hard back editions of the book published in 1985.

Open Range is another good movie with Robert Duvall.  It's easy to watch since it doesn't require the time investment that Lonesome Dove does.

You gotta watch it, Sammy. Right now it's free on Comcast if you have Encore. Just scroll down the menu to Westerns

Yes sir Mad Dog, get what ya need to see that series, you're way overdue bud.
You can rent it, buy it, borrow it or just plain steal it, but do it and quit missin' out.

You can thank us all later ...  and you will.

Currently watching this again. And it's still just as good, if not better.

Great movie. Open Range too, although Hollywood got a bit carried away with magazine and cylinder capacities on that one.
