Riverside 16 ga hammer double
« on: March 19, 2016, 05:50:26 PM »
Nothing special about this one, it's a "hardware store" shotgun made by Stevens and marketed under the name Riverside Arms. It is a 16 ga with 30" fluid steel barrels and outside hammers. According to the serial number, it was made in 1927. I used to hunt quail and dove with it but mainly use it for home protection now. Due to its age, I only shoot black powder English made felt wad Gamebore shells in it, though 16 ga is getting harder and harder to find in both smokeless and black powder.

My biggest concern is that when I pass away, my wife will sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them.

Good looking shotgun, very similar to the WH Baker designed New Baker Shotgun.  I enjoy shooting the old shotguns as I find the lore of the double gun very satisfying.

Me too Strawhat. I used to shoot this one too, but sold it about a dozen years ago. It also was a 16 ga. For the life of me, I can't remember the maker but do recall that it was made around 1906.

Stevens bought out Riverside around the turn of the century and used the name IIRC until the early 30's. I have a Riverside box lock and the insides are nothing like a Stevens.

Very nice examples! Thanks for sharing!
I was not aware that commercially loaded BP shotgun shells were available.

Buffalo Arms offers black powder shells in both 10 and 12 gauge:

You're welcome. I do like the double guns. I take this one out once a year just for fun and fire at water jugs with it.

all of these dbl shot guns seem to point just like a rifle when you shoulder them. the point of aim is phenomenal.

Nice old hammer gun, Hardware Store or not. Not a 16 Ga, but I recently acquired an old Hopkins & Allen hammer double in 12. No serial number, but a gunsmith friend told me it was called a Model 100. I don't know how to post pictures otherwise I would have. Guess that better be my New Years resolution!
Only Blackpowder is interesting.

I also have a GERMAN 16 GA. dbl. and what I do to shoot it with BP, is hand load the hulls for it .I bought MAG-TEC, brass hulls and hand load them with components from TOTW. not a problem and loaded and shot them many times. just wash them out with warm soapy water after shooting them.
